I played SH2 long ago, and what I can remember now is.. there weren't 3D room at all, but panels only. No dynamic campaign, but only one mission series and it was always the same. Ship AI was poor: they ram you if you go across their route. I don't remember well whether you was able to improve your submarine, probably you got some new feature authomatically. And no crew managment and no crew visible on the sub!

That is a good assesment of the game and add in the ships would run into each other and collide with land also. Convoys were really screwed up and the ships would bunch up into a total cluster f@#%.
Even with the various patches it never got right.
The only decent item it had was a calendar that gave you sunrise and sunset and phases of the moon for a particular date.
Free would be too much to pay for the game.
Stay away!

Good luck getting it to work. I tried re-installing SH2 about a year ago on my new system. It just kept giving me Janus errors. I never got past the loading screen.

Trust me you're not missing much. The graphics were pretty dated even by 2001 standards when it was released. Flat lifeless oceans, dead and empty ports. About it's greatest strength was that it modded pretty easily.

Last year I've tried SH2 too but after 10-20 minutes of playing I was like "what a trash " and returned to SH3 because in my opinion it's the best sub simulator so far (until I'll see SH5)

I agree!

Pick SH3 and one of those fancy mega-mods and you're settled. Sure, there are a few things that we old-timers of SH2 miss in SH3, but those are not that big to warrant 10 bucks.

The calendar as already stated, some nice maps (like AOTD) and a few game mechanics, like the pups and such.

But all in all, not worth the 10 bucks! Save the money for something better!

Cheers

SH2 was at its time the only option for a 3D submarines game, and the interaction with Destroyer Command had its appeal. But nowadays, for anyoone who never sweated and cried with it, and who has a PC that will run SH3, there is simply no comparison possible. Ignore SH2 and skip to SH3.

SH1 and Command Aces of the Deep are a different matter, though. If you value gameplay and ambient above graphics, you could still have some fun with either of them.

Good luck.
