No; you have to wait for the "she is going down" message.

You have to be within sight or hearing range of your victim at the moment it goes down.

Really? I think I've been rewarded sunken ships out of my range. They didn't appear as red icons on the map but they were written down in the captain's log.

The true range for credit of renown (if your not close enough to receive the "She's going down" message) is the rendering range of the ship model in the SH3 world which is approximately 35/50km.

Yeah, was just lining myself up on a tramp steamer when a convoy pretty much turned up on a reciprocal course.
Hit the tramp steamer, knocked his engines out, then chased and attacked the convoy. After half a day of evading and depth charging I headed back along the convoys track, and blow me the tramp steamer was still there. Deck gun fodder! I measured it at 28k. I was sure that was outside the spawning range, but happy days, it was still there. ![]() |

Usually a damaged ship that doesn't sink won't disappear. I've gone back for them more than once.
With lone merchants I hang around for a few hours, and if they don't sink after four or so I deliver the coup de grace. With convoys of course you can't do that. If I'm sure I sank a ship but don't get credit I just imagine that it limped into port a few days later and I'm just out of luck. Love your sig, Sergei! ![]()

Thanks SS.
I swear posting a pic of my sub puts a jinx on it. It's not my questionable tactical decisions that get me sunk. Oh gosh no. My abilities as a skipper are without equal (in my mind). Definitely the jinx. Yep. Last edited by sergei; 12-27-09 at 08:07 PM. |

Oh of course. That explains everything.
Picks up heavy object. You know, something you can get a good swing with. Bernard, come here a minute, I want a little word with you. Whats up Skip? THUD. Ow. Don't do it again son. Problem solved. Thanks SS. |

On the subject of returning from a chase to finish off a damaged vessel left behind say without a rudder or screw which I have done a number of times ... I have often wondered if there was a 'trigger' that would spawn air cover or destroyers? In real life in WW2 if a damaged ship was floundering would not a escort, tow or air cover be provided? Curious.

Usually, yes. Even at the height of the u-boat terror, Britannia still ruled the waves. And the same was true in Japanese waters. The records of both sides have many accounts of merchants that had to be left behind by the convoy, but a day or two later some lone merchant would come by and give them a tow. One Japanese ship actually broke in half while under tow - the stern sank, but the forward half was taken to a safe harbor and the cargo (part of it anyway) was salvaged.

So Steve, is the sim coded for either a vessel to show for a tow, or air cover or destroyer to show up? I have had some fun trying to reacquire the target sometimes especially in rough weather or fog. Also wonder how long the damaged ship will be at sea (in the sim) before it 'ghosts' away. Do they still head for the last waypoint? Great fun to reacquire.
S' PC I have had air cover show up near a coastline.
