Granted that I play paintball only at the very basic levels, but I just think that a fully automatic paintball gun kinda goes away from the spirit of paintball (at least the way our group plays it).

We like to put more emphasis on stalking, tracking, hiding, and sniping. But like I said, we are just a bunch of idiots having fun with paintballs

That being said, I think the MG42 did look way way way cool

How does one "snipe" with a .68 caliber, spherical, gel-filled projectile fired at a comparatively low velocity? I have only seen that done once, by a guy with a custom pump-action and incredible combat skill. He hit a running target in the ankle with a single shot after emerging from a barrage of surpressing fire. He was later ""killed" by me in a short-range shootout because he could not match the volume of fire that my semi-automatic could produce.

Stalking, hiding, and tracking are all very important parts of field paintball as a combat simulation, but when it comes down to it, they cannot match firepower. As with real combat, only four things(excluding support) really matter in a knock-down drag-out firefight: firepower, maneuver, cover, and positioning, with firepower being the most important. Even a single combatant with an automatic weapon and sufficient ammunition can obtain the remaining three requisites rather easily when pitted against a foe with semi-automatic or manual-action weapons.

You would be amazed at how much that statement resembles the conduct of combat troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many are combat professionals. Many more are just kids with guns.

Sounds like the paintball arms race is alive and well. I used to play back when hopper feed pumps were just taking over from the tube magazine pistols. I can imagine that given a paintballs lack of ballistic stability being able to hose your opponent with automatic fire would be a huge advantage.
