Default Suicide Crash Dive!

Hi ladies and gentlemen.

Could you help me out with an issue I'm having? I've taken a VIIC to sea in 1940 and upon arriving in deep water conducted some drills to ensure it was essentially the same as the VIIB I used previously.

I ordered a crash dive to see where the boat would end up. Immediately, the engines go to Forward Emergency, and we're submerged in 25 sec or so. But, whereas the VIIB would level out at 70m deep, the VIIC just keeps on going. I didn't have the guts to let her keep going down, knowing that the text-book maximum depth is 150m. As we past 125m, I ordered to maintain depth and finally stopped going down at 145m.

Does the Chief simply forget we're diving? Is it a bug or what?

Also, I ordered a couple of knuckle turns while being hunted by a convoy escort, while simultaneously going deeper. Again, the engines went to full-pelt (pinging stopped, presumably because the destroyers could hear me) and thirty seconds, a minute pass... there's no turn. I had to order the rest of the manuevouer manually.

Is it a bug, or do I need a new Chief?

Siber.

In case you are using SH3 Commander: You may want to check if sabotage and malfunctions are enabled. In this case I think the crash dive depth may be set to a deeper value to simulate problems with dive planes etc.

Cheers!

The same thing happened to me recently.I wasn't really paying attention so I got the "we are diving too deep" message before I realized anything was wrong.Even then I just sat gawping with dissbelief as we plunged past 180m.Then a moment of blind panic - AUSBLASEN!!! - EMERGENCY REVERSE.
I am using gwx3 and commander with malfunctions turned on although I didn't recieve any reports of a malfuntion.

Ha! Took a VIIC down to 254m yesterday and lived to tell the tale. Although I was sweating bullets, granted... Well, they seemingly gave me an exceptionally sturdy boat this time

But still, she _can_ take a lots of punishment that girl, so just forget the test depth and go silent and deep whenever you have to! I usually start to pay attention when I pass the 220m mark myself...

Yah

Well there I was, coolly cruising around on the U.S. Eastern Seaboard looking for targets, when out of the mist comes a lone DD forcing me to dive sharpish! Now I don't know what his problem was, an ace complex or what, but he just couldn't let me go no matter what I finally slipped away after 3 hours of frantic manouvering combined with making like a very small and quiet hole in the water...

Fortunately, what one can do with a VIIC is to go deep... and then a bit deeper just to make sure. Yah, was what saved my butt in the end
