I used to play tennis many moons ago, and I believe this grunting/moaning/screaming all started with Monica Seles.

We had a thread on that a year ago or so. Back then they had measured the volume of sharapova'S noise, and if I remember it correctly they found it's peak to be reaching to levels comparing to a jet engine, and rated it as a health threat.

What the 2 of them are doing is the old martial art technique of a martial yell (Kiyai). Its good for 2 reasons, one it can break the focus of an enemy, and most importantly it helps focus power, speed and precision in a strike. Virtually all martial arts use some form of kiyai. Those 2 are just applying the concept to tennis.

It is also used to mask the stroke of the player....apparently slices and spins etc are decipherable to a tennis pro very early in their execution by the sound the racket makes when hitting the ball.
