Default Eternal Newbie

Hello,
I'm coming back to SHIII after long nad annoying problems with my computer, but this time it is not only running, but also running with GWX2.1, (I'm still amazed!), SH Commander and a few smaller mods... So I'm trying to get in seriously, after having many times tried to start a career and completing just two or three patrols.
I have one technical question - do I really have to re-install everything (fourth time!) to get rid of the black sky issue? Actually, it gets blue again when I disable the 16km atmosphere optional mod.
Then some tactics: what is your favourite flotilla? I started n the 7th on U-49 (I love their emblem!) and spent a patrol on the Baltick sea on looking at peaceful cargos that I couldn't attack as the war hadn't started yet, then I waited until Septembet 1st and I sunk two Polish destroyers in the Hela harbour. Dönitz didn't seem to appreciate it that much. For my third patrol I'm assigned to a grid (sorry, I don't have the chart where I am now) north-west to Cornwall's coast. So I wonder if the 2nd Flotilla wouldn't have been a better choice for the very beginning of the war, and first of all, if it is a suicide to attempt passing the Channel instead of making a nearly complete tour of English Isles.
By the way, whqt happens when the date of the historical sinking of my boat comes (I have "Historical crew" and "Simulate realistic crew transfers" checked in SH Commander)? Do I get an obligatory transfer?

I'm sorry if these are all basic questions of no interest...

Welcome aboard, Weyprecht!

Personnaly, I prefer the 2nd flotilla.
Sorry, I don't know about the sky.
You may want to visit my kielman website and read the articles related to survival.

Good luck, Herr Kaleun!

No, nothing happens and you just keep going.

I think you should roll-back SH3 Commander!
The black sky often happens if one installs mods without rolling back the Commander first!:hmm:

Welcome aboard Kaleun.

Being a Type IX addict means I generally start in the 2nd Flotilla.

Rollback SH3 Commander disable all your mods then reinstall them activating the 16km mod last.

If that doesn't work, post a list of what mods your using.

Good Hunting

Also, as to the Channel and the grid NW of the coast of Cornwall...

If it's 1939 why not go for it, the channel is survivable in 1939 if not exactly easy, and the approaches to the bristol channel are definitely a great hunting ground if you like sinking tankers, odds are however that if you pass the strait of Dover you won't even get as far as the Atlantic on account of having run out of eels... and then you'll have to run the channel again on the way back..

oh well that's life in the Ubootwaffe

P.S. There's a brief guide to running the channel in the GWX manual
