Any love for AN 14?

I hear lots of good things about BE39 (stayed there for four days with nothing), Gibraltar's great, AM 53 is stupid busy (that whole West coast is), BF 13-17 is good too. But I've really had a lot of success up at AN 14, near the Shetlands. There's a ton of traffice going through there early in the war, and most of it is unescorted, or escorted by smaller patrol ships. The water isn't terribly deep (~100M), but I've been able to shake destroyers without too much effort so long as the water is a little rough (6+). Also, I love that the waters seem to be calmer there. I don't know if that's just coincidence or if it's built into the game somehow, but I get a lot of deck gun kills around the area. There doesn't seem to be a lot of RAF cover (compared to the East/West coasts), and the only big problem is wasting time tracking down the odd sailboat posing as a merchant. Despite the proximity of Scapa, it doesn't seem to be a factor.

So how about it, anyone else like hunting off England's northern tip?

And because I'm sure some experienced sub commander will read this, I'll cram in an extra question: When transiting from one base to another, with a Null patrol zone, do you have free reign to hunt around on that transit, or should one simply make for their new port ASAP?

Yup,like hunting in AN14 as you pointed out the water can be a little shallow,much less than I'd like but you can get a lot of traffic only problem is they can call on there mates at scapa who will send out DD's to look for you if you really starty roughing up the natives and as you also point out you do at least get to use the deck gun,in fact its where I usually use up most of my deck gun ammo since the weather any where else in the entire ocean seems to always preclude this as for the 'NULL' patrol zone,fill your boots and sink'em all,its what your there for the ocean is your oyster

I just patroled AF78 for a couple of days. A few ships but just small ones. But I do like that general area for lone, unescorted merchants.
I've patroled that AN area as well, but feel a little safer up north a bit more.

Early war only, though. I imagine air patrols get pretty nasty later on.

I'm just grid AN26 and get first coastal merchant and little awhile granville freighter, then gave to NO order to go AN41 and get large merchant

my favorite place of hunting is approx. 300 kms west of St. Jean et Miquelon, (St. Johns Naval Base) on the Newfoundland Bank. Most Konvoi's and Einsatzgruppen coming that way through.

Of course, in 39' I was abusing the shetland/NGB route ( dont know if it has a name or not?), as long as you are not into sinking only the super heavy stuff, then it is nice for the lone merchants and freighters!!! However, as time has gone by, I like to stick a bit further south, closer to home in case I need to stop of at St. Naz for a rearmerment stop :P And untill im willing to deal with the heartbreak of abandoning my VII for a IX, I think Im content with the southern routes...

AN14, or thereabouts, sure good hunting.
That's not the problem, BE is the problem. If I'm out of Biscay and head to AN, 90% of the time I can garuntee I'll never make it out of BE without scoring some tonnage and needing to return. It is like the mistress of the Atlantic, calling your boat. Perhaps a transfer to Norway for at least one carrer is in order. Got a carrer slammin some good tonnage in AK, resupply nearby. Gettin the frack away from air cover is nice. But it won't be long before it's time to return to home-port.
You guys drivin` the type IX's alot might be thinking what the frack is he talkin about? Or perhaps use the eel ladden boat to help escape BE's tonnage seduction. One more thing to ponder.
So I made thousands of messages to help remind myself there is good hunting elsewhere. And indeed there is. The question to then bear in mind is how many carrers would one need to find out. The answer may never surface, but for the messages, stay tunned.*

I`ll agree there danurve, BE draws me back like a magnet. Midwar, I hunt off CG85, dangerous as hell, but a lot of shipping comes, and goes thru Gibraltar. The air cover will keep you submerged during the daytime hours, and you`ll hunt mostly at night. I`ve even been attacked on the surface at night by search light equipted Catalina`s, so you can`t count out air detection at night. In fact I just lost a VIIc in that area yesterday, she was on her 35th patrol. Puts

Yep south east corner BE 55,I can't stay away,never run out of traffic,mostly troop transports and tankers,mucho tonnage

Personally, after 1941, I like patroling grids BF-38 through BF-32. A vertical grid line through three grids. There is always a convoy cruising through. Several will have up to three troop transports, and some have two troop transports and a passenger liner. Still others will include troops ships, plus two T-3 tankers, two T-2 tankers, and a small tanker.

AM-68 is another good spot. Park yourself just south of the island and wait. Within a week, a convoy will pass you by. If your lucky, they will come by at night, when its calm, and no fog.

yea jimbuna....thats why theres all different types of tartan to choose from....always try get something nice.....you wouldnt want to pull an ugly sheep!!!!
