New York harbor

hello, I have been playing Silent Hunter III recently, and from a short amount of time i started as a really nooby U-boat commander to a decent beginner..anyways, long story short, im in may 1941 in career mode, and was wondering if i go into New York harbor will there be any ships to sink, and is it worth sneaking into, cause i tried once to sneak in portsmouth, only to sneak past 3 destroyers, and 2 trawlers, and finding only 1 merchant in the harbor... which sucked, lol, then began a long trech out of there, sinking 1 destroyer...anyways, just wanted to know if it were worth sneaking into New York harbor and if there will be any ships there, as it seems sometimes there are alot of ships in a harbor and sometimes there are none, any advice would be great, thanks. also any other places to sink many ships on the map would be appreciated thanks.

I highly recommend NYC.

It is both lightly defended, and stocked with tonnage.

If you go, expect to break the 50 000 mark easily.

I finished my NYC / East Coast with 108 000 after expending all of my deck gun, and all torpedoes.

Expect to find a Ceramic type ocean liner (14000 tons if memory serves), several Modern tankers, several liberty ships, and an assortment of tramps and medium cargos.

You will need to cross a subnet at the start of the harbour channel guarded by two bunkers.
At night with some poor weather, you can cross it easily with decks awash or a depth of about 8 meters.
I've crossed it in daylight / glass seas by lowering both periscopes into their housings, a depth set at 10 meters, and just scraped across the very top with no damage to any compartments (meaning, hull structural damage, but not serious, maybe 1-5 %).
I've also slipped through in daylight by using the external view underwater, and taking the boat fully submerged between two subnet post-dealy's, suffering no damage. Its kind of cheating though if you can slow down and use the external camera, but whatever floats your boat.

The harbour itself is patrolled by two torpedo boats and a docked destroyer.
I recommend expending torpedoes on the way in, heading up the NE channel past the harbour to surface and restock torpedoes from the external stores, and then shooting more targets on the way out.

If you are carefull you can spend your torpedoes wisely. There is no need to worry about escorts so don't be afraid to let vessels hit with single torpedoes on the first run flood and sink on their own while you go to reload. If they don't appear to by listing significantly / sunk on the exit run, put your aft tubes into them.

Gibraltor's a great place if you can make it into the actual harbor. Usually 5-10 merchants, DD's and at any given time some battleships, carriers, light/heavy cruiser's and other juicy warships.

if you have gwx 2.0 installed, use the Belchen supply ship off the coast of Greenland to make trip to NYC before Dec 1941. The US are still neutral and you may find British ships laying in the harbour.

Spoken like a true gamer. In real life there was only one successful harbor raid; Prien's attack at Scapa Flow, and it was carefully planned by admiral Doenitz himself, using aerial photographs and much spy information.

New York harbor should be a deathtrap, period. So should Portsmouth, or any other naval base.

Uh, yeah. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the Silent Hunter III forum.

I think we're all acutely aware of the differences between the reality of the Second World War and a game released by Ubisoft.

I don't refuse to shower and shave, urinate in a can, smear myself with grease and crank the heat to 35C when I play - do you?

And as long as we're on the subject, when Drumroll started 4 ships were sunk within sight of Long Island, and not one of the 13 idling destroyers that were in NY harbour at the time left the pier.
As far as harbour raids are concerned, U-230 managed to infiltrate Chesapeake Bay as far as half way to Baltimore before mining the area outside of Norfolk.

Enough with the "Spoken like a true gamer" holier-than-thou routine.

I sometimes smear myself with grease, but this is not the time or place to discuss it.

I don't want to imagine any of you smeared with grease, or anything else for that matter!!
