Default How big a threat are Torpedo Boats?

I was stalking a merchant last night that was being escorted by a single torpedo boat. I was stationary at peri depth & he passed within 200 meters without detecting me at night in heavy seas... I was kinda curious as to what he might try if he did spot me. I ended up banging a torpedo off the side of the merchant because i was too worried to back up & was just a hair under 300m when he passed by.

They're limited to visual detection right?

Will they attack you if they spot your periscope?

Torpedo boats aren't really much of a threat if you're submerged. They have no ASW weapons. The most they'll do is play the searchlight about if they think you're there. I suppose they could radio in the big boys tho. On the surface their machine guns can really cut up your deck and gun crews, especially if there is more than one of them.

Nasty upstairs, no problem underwater.

Underwater your safe, but if they spot your periscope, they can call in help they could cause problems. You can take them out on the surface, but they can cause a lot of damage to your boat and crew, and for the tonnage, it isn't worth it, unless there is something good for you to go after!

I just shoot them with the Deck gun when they really really piss me off

otherwise just submerge and they will go away pretty quickly, they have no ASW gear

in real life the were capable of torpedo attacks. Assuming they saw you first and crept up on you, by the time they went ahead flank and splashed their fish into the water it could be too late for you to evade the torpedo.

In SH3 the greatest threat is their radio... Every plane and destroyer in the area is headed your way at max speed if the torpedoe boat spots you.

I was sunk by a couple of them lately while I was loading external torpedo's. It was foggy and didn't have a radar so they jumped on me and since my boat had already serious damage it didn't took much to get me sunk. They even managed to kill the entire watching crew, including the officer. They are stupid suckers, that's for sure.

EEesshh...PT boats. Not too bad normally, but if your trying to get past Gib then they're a BIG threat. That spotlight goes down on you and every DD in the area is onto you, in shallow water thats not good!

With PT boats I just make sure that I'm not spotted because I don't want to have to deal with a few of his big buddies that he has called on the radio. They are a bit like mozzies in that they just guzz around your head. One thing I have learned with GWX is not to get into many surface gun duels with any armed vessel. The depths of the ocean is your friend.

I don't imagine I'll ever find the documentary evidence but I read an obit. in the telegraph of an MTB captain who pioneered the use of depth charges against merchant ships (by running alongside at high speed and rolling them off set to min depth).
As i said I'll try and find the cutting but I don't have much hope won't be 'till Saturday afternoon as I'm at work now and Friday night won't be spent searching out paper cuttings!

EDIT my point being that some motor boats did have depth charges as for the other gear I don't know but I have seen pics of early portable hydrophones.

who needs wassaboms!

Kaluen,

As a rule in GWX when surfaced any enemy ship is a threat. A rowboat with a air rifle can critical damage your paper thin hull.

When ever I see seagulls in port over my ship I zig zag. God forbid they drop a clamshell on my IX and crush me.

Does anyone know if torpedo boats in-game are equipped with hydrophones? Can they track a sub under water and direct reenforcements to submerged subs?
