Default How many days U-boots spend on the patrol.

Hi.
Anybody know how long take a real partol? Not in the game, in reality. For example I was read in the book, there was two type of food rations:
1 - normal for 6 weeks
2 - increased for 8 weeks

if you look on U-boat.net you will notice the patrol lengths are listed... I have seen early war type VII patrols last as little as 3 weeks, and later type IXC patrols last hundreds of days.

It just depends on the mission, the war years etc.

If you are using a type VII out of any of the french bases i would think that 4-6 weeks would be about tops.

In reality VII boats used to patrol for 3-6 weeks due to confined space, lack of torpedoes and proximity to England that made refuelling difficult. Type IX boats were patroling for anything between 2 and 6 months as it was easier to refuel in the vast oceans away from allied bases and task forces.

When you pull into port, dont lull yourself into a false sense of security, your mines and subnets are just a petty challenge for my crew and I.

Here is the longest patrol ever. Not a very successful one, either:

So... the 24hours patrol time in SHIII is anything but realistic then... god! I thought I was making it look real by sticking to my orders...

No. In reality U-Boats had two ways of patrolling. Initially the VIIs used to create long lines hundreads of miles long in an attempt to spot and intercept convoys. Once a convoy was picked up becon signals were flashed and all the boats (well the ones within range) were converging to the target for an attack. When the patrols were further away (and longer) the boats (especially IXs) used to be given free hunt in a large area (i.e. a whole patrol grid) and it was up to the captain to organise the search pattern and the time spent in each area. Generally speaking long range patrols were much less orchestrated and micromanaged from BdU than shorter ones closer to the British Isles.

Originally SH3 was going to be like SH2 - a series of scripted missions with patrol objectives to be completed. When the community made it clear that we wanted an AOD-style dynamic career mode, they rewrote the entire thing ( ). What remained was the 24-hour patrol objective. Some people think that they are supposed to do that and go home, when actually it's just the start.

On the other hand, real kaleuns were expected to stay in their patrol grids until further orders, even if they never saw any ships there.
