Hi Kaleuns,
I have 2 questions: 1.) In reality during WW2: If the Kaleuns of german U-Boots wanted to listen around for contacts (Rundhorchen) - On which depth did they go? On which depth did they reach the best result (Longest range) in listening around? 2.) Same question, but for "using GWX": If I want to listen around (Rundhorchen) for contacts in GWX - On which depth should I go? Is there a particular depth on which I will get the longest range in listening around (Rundhorchen)? Or do I get the same range (no matter how deep I'm)? Should I go on 14 meters, 30 meters or ?? meters depth? Greetz

I go to about 20 m depth, when trying to find ships outside the visual range. I have not made any detailed study, but my impression is that this works pretty well.

I think you get the same range regardless of your submerged depth :hmm:

In sh 3 any depth 12 or more meters works the same ![]()

I have read a book on a dutch sub wich did most of their under water stuf at 35m.
So most likely each kaleun would have his own personal depth for it. |

Well, in the "real-real" world ('cause for me, GWX is just like the "real" world), the distance of the hidrophone would change with the temperature and salt of water. This same principles and theorys are used today estimating the modern SONAR capabilities and other stuff.-

The Uboat Commanders Handbook says it should be done at 20m travelling at Silent Running.
Afterwards you should go up to PD, and have a look around. Finally, resurface at High Speed.
