Question: If its not raining, but its windy as hell making the water as rough as sin,
how could u successfully attack a convoy under these conditions? Would it be best to instead, maneuver into the convoy, and then just begin following it, hoping for a break in the weather?? hmmm, could make getting ahead of them difficult though. |

in rough weather, it is a bit difficult to find and acquire targets, one must be carefull not to broach the surface. I set my torps to magnetic so that they will run deeper.
It is best to attack at night when you can keep your scope up longer without being detected.

Had one last night west of Loch Ewe. It was about 10:00 AM; seas washing over the conning tower bridge, overcast, and heavy fog. Cruising along at about 5 Kts minding my own business then out of the fog comes a British medium freighter, coming straight on at about 7 kts and about 200 meters range, bearing 0. Not word one from my faithful bridge watch.
In order I: 1. Ordered flank ahead 2. Hard port rudder 3. Called down through the conning tower hatch for a clean pair of shorts. After shearing off I circled around to go after him, but lost him in the fog. Finally submerged to 50 meters and had my sonar man locate him on the hydrophone. Came to periscope depth, hit him with one eel fired at about 400 meters range, contact-fused, and running depth set for 3 meters. he went down like a rock. |

Well, its been a loooonnnng time since i've done battle with a convoy....and well....i'm somewhat out of practice.
Some condidions i've been in, the wind has been really heavy, makign the sea really rough, hence being at Periscope depth is risky incase my tower broaches the surface. I've been thinking the following strategies: 1. For calm seas: Maneuver into an attack position possibly on the outside of the convoy, pick my targets, and fire. Or maneuver into the convoy, and fire at my targets from within the group. 2. For rough seas: Maneuver past the escorts and into the convoy, then swing around and begin heading in the direction of the convoy, when they move from visual, surface, and try to plot a course that would take my uboat alongside the convoy, and keep going till I get ahead, with occassional sound checks every hour or so to check on convoy bearing reletive to my boat. Basically keep shadowing them until there is a break in the weather. |

You might as well set an interception course and stay below 15 or so meters to avoid that the tower breaches. when the escorts went by it should not be too risky to attack at peri depth.

The problem is keeping the conning tower under water in rough sees. Today the front escort noticed me because the conning tower popped up now and then when at periscope depth. She rammed me, and I'm lucky to still be around to visit this forum...
I'll be more careful next time. ![]() |

I play gwx 1.03 and since 1.02 it may pour down I will not go even near a convoy, there's been so many times I have intercepted a convoy and went through it dead centre without spotting squat.
Bad weather I will leave it no way am I playing chicken with a dd at under 400m. |
