Hi guys the forums are about sharing knowledge and Ive seen quite a few
noob questions about what to do tactically so I thought we might share a tactic or two starting with evasion while submerged after a torpedo hit alerting the escorts. For me evasion always begins with approach, choosing the right position both for the shot and to have enough time and space to evade. if they have you I like to run towards them aimed about 30 degrees off one side or the other, when we close to the moment in the sonar window I flank ahead towards the target full left rudder full down angle for the bottom as the shooting goes off I get about halfway through the knuckle and drop a decoy into it. simultaneous to ordering silent and heading back towards the reciprocal course to the destroyers approach. causing me and the escort to gain seperation distance quickly the noisemaker and silent running both happening at the end of the sonar attack cause a break in passive contact with the escort while your in his baffles a triple move.. ![]() anybody else. That's about perfect in my opinion Mush! Another one I use just for going deep while in the convoy is head for the merchants. The escorts have to manuever so as not to ram them and it gives me enough time to get in the cellar.
After that, evasion gets more complicated. Especially if one of your excellent River Class mods are up there ![]() Cheers!!!

hehhhe, well, what I really do,
try to turn 90 degrees from the dds path at slow, then when he is nearly on me, full speed, decoy launch, turn hard right/left (to where the dd came from ) 90 another decoy in the knuckle, then silent run at 25 to 50 mt until well clear! a little prayer to the god of electrons too would not hurt |

My tactics change abit with the year in which I am fighting...my favorite and probably most successful is to get ahead of the convoy and position myself submerged at periscope depth (peri down) between the first and second rows of the oncoming convoy. When they are just about on my I raise my scope and launch all forward tubes setting the torpedos for slow for close targets and medium or fast for further targets...then I launch the bow tubes set to fast. I then go all ahead slow, lower the scope and dive to 100+meters while steering into and ahead of the convoy, go silent and let the convoy slowly pass over me as I head the same direction. About the time the last ship has passed I am usually deep and then I use my hydrophone to locate the escorts and plot the most logical escape. Then considering location and remaining torpedos I will consider racing ahead and doing it all over again.

my 2nd favorite move is to run the attack attack
in reverse and draw the escort group on a turn away angle retreating from their axis of advance then when I get to the sonar window moment I again flank ahead and reverse turn with a depth change downwards and run at high speed along or more correctly outside of and parralell to their axis of advance putting them behind me in a hurry with a very hard shake on multiple bogey's |

Yeah, the best evasion maneuver is to not get detected in the first place.
![]() After that, I just dive deep and go from there. If the enemy is right on top of me and obviously has a really good fix, I will nail the engines and make a turn at the last second. Always heading away from other escorts, and the convoy if possible. Depending on how far away the other escorts are and whether I'm in the closest one's baffles, I will keep full power for awhile, reducing it to half and finally 2kts. I don't really make depth changes unless it's deeper. The super-destroyers that are running in "god mode" obviously get around anything you can do. In this case, a save reload is warranted. |

Mush's tactics and everyone else's so far are excellent. Depending on weather, position of escorts, a slow, quiet dive either into the convoy or away has worked for me in avoiding the escorts all together. But generally I expect the escorts to be on top of me within three minutes after launching torpedoes. Except when going flank to avoid depth charges, I always have 5-7 degrees port or starboard rudder. This seems to throw off the escorts and make them drop the DCs slightly off. With each pass they wasserbomb a bit further away.

I seem to do a lot of praying.
Actually, I go deep and silent. When the enemy is over me I go to flank, down 30-50 meters and turn like crazy. After the bombs have done their thing I go back to silent. And pray.

A good defense is a good offense.
If your approaching a convoy or spot a DD before they notice u, then i get into a good firing position, havingthem in my sights UZO. When they notice me, and they r close engough for a good shot, i crash dive and before i go down i fire off a fish, (when the DD is in a fast attack move and comming right at me). I dive down to 40m and shut off the engines (not silent running) then once the engines are off i dive even more usually to 80-90 m. If i have decoys, then a deploy them once i shut my engines offs and i turn to port maybe 10-15 degrees for about 4 minutes then i even them out. thats if your in deep water. If your in Shallows, i usually say a hail mary and accept that im going to sink. If its late in the war and u r in deep water they will probably find u and sink you. Hope this stuff helps. This might work for u, i know it works for me. |
