Map scale compared to real world?

I always understood it that the world map in SH 5 was a 1:1 scale to the real world that is represented in the game. I just tested it out and found something interesting. I measured the Isle of Wight in game to be 61 KM long from furthest tip to furthest tip. A check on google earths measuring tool shows the same measurment to be 37 KM

It's actually BIGGER in the game than in real life. Also measured approx sailing distance from Danzig (Gdansk) Bay to Kiel to be almost TWICE the distance in game as is in real life. Any thoughts on this?
