1/350th scale Delta IV, FINALLY!

Just saw this kit come up in this

video.

I've been waiting for a 1/350th scale Delta IV for a long, long time. I think this is a new kit from Zvezda? Or, maybe they have finally made it over to North America?

I'm going to wait for some reviews before I buy this kit. I have their older Oscar II kit and its mostly un-buildable (horrible molding and the scale is wrong). One hassle I can see so far, the screws are multi-piece plastic and you need to glue the blades to each hub.

You might want to order some small fingers.

I'm not plugging Red Star (aside from them being located in one of the towns where I grew up

), I haven't ordered anything from them (yet).
However, if you're a modeler with a bunch of spare time on your hands, click that link and settle back for a browsing/shopping marathon.

Red Star specializes in odd-ball Russian/ Eastern European model kits and kits of Russian models. Their selection tends to specialize in ARMOR, AIRCRAFT, SHIPS and FIGURES. These are the "unobtainium" kits you hear about at model shows or read about on modelling forums. Ever wanted to build a 1/72 scale Learjet 60? They have it (look under "A Model").

Those mythical Special Hobby kits Phil gushes about on Youtube? They're in stock.

How about a 1/48th scale Mig 25 with the camera nose? Yep, its there.

How about something really different, a "no nose" very early version of a C-130A Hercules? There are three that I found on the site.

How about Eduard detail sets and photo-etch that aren't on a constant back-order?

Prices aren't too bad considering the odd ball nature of these kits. I'm going to order the Delta IV from these folks (this month?) once they get it in stock.

I haven't ordered mine yet. Red Star had the kit listed but NOT in stock for several months (go figure, something about a virus) plus I wanted to see a build review, something like this:

So, before I dive head-long into that rabbit hole, some more thoughts about the Zvezda Delta. I'm still holding back on this kit because I bought their older Oscar II/Kursk kit, which turned out to be unbuild-able but was fairly in-expensive and a neat souvenir of Russian packaging (you can't build the model but the parts will survive WWIII).

The Oscar is the main reason I've held off on the Delta. Hobby Boss came to the rescue with an Ocsar II in 1/350th scale that really IS in 1/350th scale and features finely molded and accurate parts that fit together. So granted, the Zvezda Oscar was an early effort and who knows where they found those molds

, but as I also feared the new Delta looks to be a handful in a rather small scale. Never mind the screws in the kit, look at how many pieces are required to build the basic hull.

If you're looking for a quick project in 1/350th scale, how about the most decorated ship in the history of the US Navy?

That version would be the later run from San Fran to the North Pole to the Barents and White Sea and back.

Mikro-Mir also has the earlier version of the boat when she ran up to the "Sea of O".

So, I ordered a selection of screws from

on Monday and they arrived today (Friday). Keeping in mind Mike is in N.C. and I'm in Iowa, that's still a very quick turn-around.

Prices are very fair considering what you get, and what you get will knock your socks off.

No kidding, these parts look almost unreal. That attention to detail does come at a cost, however. You need to be very careful in how you separate the screw from its "runner". If you're considering buying these screws for the first time, consider doing a double order so you have something to practice on for the first time.
Mike recommends using a curved ultra fine saw blade. I tried that and my favorite plastic cutter with similar results. Most of the screws cut loose with no problems but I lost a blade (each) on two of the larger 688 screws. Like I said, plan on doing some practice so you get the feel on how to work with these parts.
If you check the pictures for Mike's items, you'll see how the parts are molded inside a "runner" system. This is normal for plastic kits but not so normal for resin parts. While the runner helps protect the part for shipping, I should note that one blade did break loose during shipping but I'm not blaming Mike.

One important thing to keep in mind, these ARE resin parts and not plastic. They are also VERY accurate in terms of scale thickness and at this scale that means some parts are incredibly thin and prone to snapping.

You've been warned, now place your order.

The best way I can explain on how to remove the runner is to start on the outside and work your way in. Each runner tapers close to the part, so try to leave some excess to avoid snapping a blade or having some of the resin shatter. DO NOT try to cut off the runner "flush" to the part. After making the first cut, cut off the runner from its base to get it out of the way. Its better to leave a small nub of runner on the part and clean it up using a very fine file (a nice file for this job is Tamiya's diamond coated PE file). Use a light touch and take your time, the result will be worth it.

Paint is your choice but for US subs I would recommend starting with Tamiya Titanium Gold (X-31) as a base color then weather the part as you see fit. Just don't plan on using a lot of paint coats at this scale. Since its also resin, you should plan on priming the part but avoid putting down too much paint.

These screws are highly recommended if you've already had experience working with resin and very small parts.

My dad is taking me to the hobby store tommorrow for some paint and a new model. I'll see what I can find.

My most recent build is an FA18 Super Hornet. I need paint for my F22 Raptor, and I will get another model AND the paint for that as well.

I will post a picture of the Super Hornet, give me a few minutes, or days.

In this scale, mostly no.

There are pre-built and pre-painted/decaled versions of the Hobby Boss 1/350th (and 1/700th) scale models from a company called Easy Model in their Sea Power series.

They aren't kits as much as they are collectibles (like larger scale die-cast cars) but I do plan to put my Chinese Kilo in dry dock to add an updated screw.

They are more expensive, harder to find (check your local version of Ebay or Amazon), and rare but they are available from time-to-time.
