The first permits were issued in December 1924 -- more than eight years before construction began.

Unlike other Bay Area bridges that are owned by the state, the Golden Gate is owned by a special district run by board members who represent San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Mendocino and Del Norte counties. That explains why tolls are different than they are on other bridges, such as the Bay Bridge.

About 600,000 rivets hold up each tower. The main cables contain more than 80,000 miles of steel wire.
It was the world's longest suspension span until New York City's Verrazano-Narrows Bridge opened in 1964.
How long is it? That depends on where you start measuring. The suspension span is 4,200 feet, making it the world's ninth-longest.
