Let me tell you my story.
In heavy fog I detected fiji cruiser (Btw wac 5.0) rushed to it because its going fast. Launched torpedeos(all missed) after 10 secs got detected started to crash dive. I suffered minimal damage. Surfaced and proceeded with my patrol then after like 10 hours the same cruiser came from fog and started to open up with main batterys died instantly. |

It is possible that enemy war ships (destroyers, cruisers etc.) detect you with sonar even if your sub is moving on the surface. This can explain why the cruiser got out of the fog and was able to instantly fire on you, but that's just an idea...Never happened to me, but I need to play more.

The sonar can't detect a surfaced submarine, it's useful only when the U-boat is underwater. If you got caught in heavy fog, it must have been due to radar or pure bad luck.
