Nuke Big January Blizzard

That's all they're talking about in the truck stops. Supposed to be massive, Washington will get the worst of it according to predictions. The subway is shutting down for the weekend. Are you affected? What preps have you taken? Stay warm and good luck.

I don't think there will be any driving this weekend.

People will still need to get somewhere.
Public transport, especially one that's underground would be a must.

Ok, I am not part of the planning, but I believe what is implied is this storm makes travel unsafe, so people should stay home. Cancel going to work, cancel the trips to the mall, cancel everything except emergency services.

And I'm sure the folks who man the subways are not interested in staying at work all weekend. I doubt if they get paid enough for that.

Finnish Railway's biggest enemy is winter... in Finland.. which comes every year.

Same can be said about southern Finns. Really, winter comes every year, how are you not prepared for it?

Reminds me of our own road services.
In november they boast how they're prepared for winter, snowfall is forecasted a week in advance and when snow falls they claim they were surprised by it.

Average temperatures, freezing at night but quite tolerable in the day, an occasional dusting of snow. Cool but bland.

It's looking like it'll miss us up here in New England which is good because I have a football game to go to Sunday afternoon!

Some pro-tips from a lifelong New Englander:

  • Make sure to buy at least $100 in Banquet frozen dinners for every inch of snow forecasted.
  • Be sure to arrive at the grocery store two hours before the time the snow is forecasted to begin, when there is no more shopping carts or salt left in the store.
  • Never, ever shovel your sidewalk. Doing so is a sign of weakness.
  • Don't slow down when you're driving. If you go off the road, there's plenty of soft fluffy snow to land in.
  • Make sure to continuously blare your horn at every pedestrian who has elected to walk in the street, rather than in three feet of snow.
  • If you lose power, call every restaurant in the area to see if any of them have a generator, because you bought nothing but frozen dinners and can't heat them.

They are saying that in addition to D.C, New England is going to get it too. With the forecasters giving notices days in advance of a storm, there is no reason to be out anyhow except in an emergency.

Being off the road also helps the road crews with their job of clearing the roads and making them passable.
