Default Best games of 2014

What have been your additions to your simulation/game library this year that in your opinion really stood out from the mass?

Me, I did not collect many games anymore. The biggest hit I stumbled over of course can only be

Assetto Corsa.

No surprise for anyone, probably. Even as Early Access, now officially feature-complete and for my taste in a state that I treat it like a complete game, it excels in what it focusses on: driving a car both realistically and fast. Best driving sim I have ever had the pleasure to drive in my life, hands down. I stopped flying and tankfighting, because of this - that good it is.

The other personal favourite of 2014 that I must list, is

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter,

most beautiful both in visual and way of narration, very intense in mood and atmosphere. The short length cannot distract from the great quality experience.

I had reasons why I started new threads on both of these games.

List your absolute favourites of 2014 (but not just any new game you got, but really just the best of the best, in your opinion).

P.S.
And yes, its true, not a single tank or flight hour for me this year.

No matter how I think, I just can't seem to remember a game from 2014 that was anything special.

Is this the lost year in your life, then? Your midlife crisis...?

Door Kickers got a proper release! Banished? Goat simulator? The list is almost endless.

Hegemony Rome: The Rise of Caesar is a great game. Still a bit rough around the edges, maybe, but still fun and made with a lot of passion.

I have to agree with Dowly, not much of anything stands out to me either. What's disappointing to me is the growing trend in 2014 for releasing games that aren't finished. Nothing but beta's, early access stuff. I can remember a few years ago how excited everyone would be for great games coming out around this time of year, now meh.

I have to give a plug to Wolfenstein: the New Order.

I like to play FPS every once in a while, to me the Gold standard is still Half Life 1 and 2.

Wolfenstein is not at that level, but not far off, certainly one of the most satisfying FPS I have played in a long while.

It is very much old school: lots of enemies to kill, lots of ways to kill them, not too much psycho babble, but it works; lots of variety and no technical issues. It also has the most kick ass graphics I have seen in a long time.

I have a few that hit my memorable list.

Elite: Dangerous

Yes, I was an alpha/beta/gamma tester. But I really enjoyed the game from the outset. Since it has been released, I can list it.

Caribbean!
Not sure if this should be listed - as its still a work in process and not an "official" release as yet. Still - uses the M&B engine for piratey adventures. Gotta enjoy that!

Dragon: The Game
Still in alpha but so much potential. Be the dragon!

Lords of the Black Sun
A 4x space game (that changed names a few times). Again, was in the beta and really hope to see this one succeed now that its out and available.

Final entry - and I both laud and curse it.....

Dragon Age: Inquisition
So much gameplay - and so much potential yet untapped. Some additional bug fixes and some modding tools and this could easily be the next Skyrim...... except for the cartoonish graphics.

I picked up IL 2 Sturmovic -Battle of Stalingrad. They say its a finished product but it still has a long way to go before it it worth the 100 bucks they want for it.

Why then do you list it here under "best games of 2014" ?

Don't worry, Cybermat will be along shortly to defend it.

Just finished playing through it.... twice.

Loved it. Every damn minute of it.

Everything just works in it. The weapons sound and feel great, the story was fantastic and the soundtrack was just amazing.

Can't wait for Old Blood!

if these are the "best of" people could come up with, i shudder to think how absolutely the "worst of" would be.

it's all unmitigated garbage. there were zero good games in 2014. bottomline.

Uhm. What do you consider a good game?

Some games released in 2014:
- Ultimate General
- This War of Mine
- Alien: Isolation
- Door Kickers
- Elite: Dangerous
- Wargame: Red Dragon
- Banished

So, none of these titles can be considered "good"?
I guess the only good game then is HL³.
