Default GWX3 @ 2560x1440 res?

Hello everyone,

I've just got myself a very nice new Asus monitor, PLS panel with a native res of 2560x1440.

However, I'm not having much luck getting SH3 with GWX3 to run at this resolution. Putting the resolution in the high res fix cfg file just causes SH3 to fail to start.

Can anyone help?

Cheers.

What OS are you using? Does SH3 run at the games stock resolution? Don't run the batch file for the Hi-Res-Fix unless you're using Win XP. You might try reading through this http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=209346 thread and see if you can glean anything that helps. There are lots of other threads about this topic too. Even if you get it to run at that res it will be all stretched out of shape. You might be better off finding a 4:3 compatible res, like 1920 X 1440 perhaps.

Thanks for the advice Greybeard.

I'm running Win 7 x64.

If I set my desktop res to 1024x768 I can start the game in that fine.

Likewise if I set my desktop res to 1920x1080 and the cfg correspondingly the game again starts fine.

Once I set my desktop res to 2560x1440 and the cfg to match it just doesn't work. I get the little blue Win7 loading cursor for a second and then nothing.

I'd really like to get this up and running at 2560x1440 as pretty much everything else I have looks absolutely awesome at this res running with my new GTX780Ti. I see in another thread (the one about the widescreen UI for GWX) that somebody else has it running at 2560x1440 and realised I must be doing something wrong.

I suggest you look through these threads: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=175278 http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=166320 There is a different version of the d3d9.dll for the widescreen versions available. That might or might not fix your problem. Only way to tell for sure is to d'load and try. I don't believe you can d'load just the dll, you must get the whole shebang.

Default More suggestions

Hello Pielstick,

In addition to the threads identified by GreyBeard, you might want to try some of the hints provided in a thread that's stickied on the SH4 WOTP forum. It's titled "Nvidia tweaks to SH3/SH4" and I don't know why it hasn't been copied, or something, and stickied here too.

I had somewhat the same experiences that you describe; none of the wide-screen fixes helped. But, I did get results by putting the XPSP2 resfix d3d9.cfg and d3d9.dll files into the SH3 folder and setting the resolution I wanted in the .cfg file and in the "Main.cfg" file in the "My Documents\SH3" folder. I did run the resfix batch file, but it opened and closed so fast that I think maybe Win 7 just shut it down before it could function...don't know for sure (yes, I run this stuff as Administrator w/o UAC and the subsims are all outside of the Program & Program X86 folders and run in XP SP2 compatibility mode...just to be "safe"). Another problem that came up once or twice was the GPU frequency seemed to reset itself to 59Hz and the monitor wants 60Hz. I can't remember how that was finally fixed, but they both play well together now at 60Hz. After setting all that up, I opened the NVIDIA control panel and set up the 3D configuration for SH3.exe as recommended in the NVIDIA tweaks thread. All the experts say to be sure you've got the latest drivers and all that, but I've had to roll-back the NVIDIA drivers twice before; the latest update seems to be working well however.

Anyway, I finally succeeded in running SH3/GWX3.0/MFM3.2 and a bunch of sound fixes and eye-candy MODs, with h.sie's V16B1 patcher, on an Alienware Area 51, Win7 X64, with dual GeForce GTX460s and a Dell U3011 monitor. Although the monitor has a native res of 2560X1600, I keep SH3 in 4:3 aspect at 2048X1536 and it looks wonderful (for a 2005 generation game); I can live with the black bars on the sides, the rest of the image is huge. Be patient, be persistent and I'm sure you'll find the right combination to solve your problem.

BTW, how/where did you come by the "Pielstick" name? I'm very familiar with Pielstick and haven't found that many others who know anything about it.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, looks like I've got some reading to do.

The funny thing is I've never had a problem running GWX at 1920x1080. Even on my new monitor it runs fine at this resolution, but I'd really like to see how it looks at 22560x1440.

As for "Pielstick".....

I'm a marine engineer officer with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Service and most of the ships I've sailed on have been powered by Crossley Pielstick PC2.2 and 2.3 engines. I've also had some time looking after a very big Sulzer 8RND90 and a fair bit of time with diesel electrics powered by Wartsilas of various sizes.

Pielstick:

Were you able to find a fix to the resolution? Just upgraded to a 1440 monitor and would like to know if you have any suggestions.

Makes my mouth water. I play the game with an old Acer laptop with a setting of 1024x768

I know this is an old thread but I'm curious if anyone ever got 2560x1440 up and running...

curious as well. in fact, I'm curious as to how to get any type of "custom" resolution working. Searching the horizon for smoke hasn't been working for me on this topic.

I just recently got a 1080p mod working :P

The whole custom resolution thing is pretty simple. The UI elements are re-done from high resolution images and then coded in. The actual game itself (not the UI as those are simply 2D images) ie: the 3d environment is just stretched across your native resolution via a dll and cfg. The engine itself wont scale beyond 1024x768 apparently so this is a bit of a hack. The problem is you loose visual fidelity because the pixel density of the original game doesn't change, its just stretched across the increased resolution.

I really wish there was a better way around this. Sadly, SH5's more modern engine scales far better along higher resolutions. Real shame that game is a complete disaster (god what i wouldn't give for something like GWX with that level of fidelity).
