Default My first Battleship

Finally!

I left Wilhelmshaven in a Type IID on 18, Oct. 1939. My patrol grid was AN44. After completing my patrol I headed south. While sailing at periscope depth on the 23rd, my sonar man picks up a warship at 270. Raising the scope, I see six ships. 1 Hunt I destroyer, 1 V&W destroyer, 3 Tribal destroyers, and a Revenge Battleship.
The battle started at 17:03. I get within 2500m and fire a salvo of three. Going to 40m I wait and hear explosions. Now, the destroyers are all over the place. I hear them pinging me. After a few hours they start to get further away. I go to periscope depth and the Revenge is listing. I follow and work my way back to firing position. Another salvo of three and she turns over on her side. At 22:21 it's all over.
I've been playing for a number of years, even playing SH5 for a while, and I finally got one. Man! that felt good.

I was wondering why did you do that? Going to 40 depth, I mean. If I understand correctly, a sub at periscope depth is not detectable by ASDIC. Am I missing something? (FYI I still have to do my very first patrol in SHIII, I have only done the "shakedown patrol" 'cause I'm using GWX 3.0).

I just had a peek inside the AI sensors file. It looks like the minimum depth for most ASDIC devices is 10 metres. Providing I am reading this correctly then periscope depth (about 14 metres) is in detectable range.

Well, you may only avoid ASDIC detection if you are surfaced. That’s why Kriegsmarine encourages Surface Attacks during night and or bad visibility

First things first.

I go to 40m for this reason. To me, the most exciting thing about the game is not being the hunter; it's being the hunted. When I do combat, I do it in real time. I like having depth charges dropped around me. Being in the sub and hearing the explosions is what I like best. Trying to get away is nerve-wracking and fun. I have my sub set on silent running and I like to hear my sonar man whisper that a warship is moving closer at medium speed and at close range. Trying to listen and make a decision on which way to turn to avoid being hit is just fun.

As for the six torpedoes, I'm now trying the mod MEG, and the Type IID has six.
