Half way through my latest campaign I purchased a batch of mk27's and tried them out on a couple escorts and was extremely disappointed in the results, even when they hit they did not seam to phase them. After having finished an SH3 campaign and liking the German homing torpedo's I though about trying to import the T11 but then read about the MK28, which was based on the Mk18 and started production in 1944 and would probably have the same acoustic homing hardware as the Mk27, so using Silent 3ditor i tweaked the performance data for the MK27 to match the MK28 (same warhead as the Mk18 and 4000 yards/19.6kn) and now we have a useful torpedo.
As far as I can determine, unlike the mk16 which was never used in combat, the mk28 did reach combat units. I am thinking that a mod that would introduce the Mk28 in 1944 would be really useful and more historically accurate than including the mk16 in the game. |

I know this is an old post, but some thoughts have to be given to the Mk. 27 that has been mentioned.
Fisrt off, Mk. 27 was a defensive weapon. It was meant to be used against surface ships that were attacking the carrying submarine. To achieve the best results fire the weapon when the closing destroyer is making a lot of noise and when you are about to dive. It gives that destroyer something to occupy its time with while you try your ..... to get the f...k out of its way. The weapon had a range of 5,000 yards, but using it with that range was well not done. It was designed to arm itself at 250 yards after leaving the tube. It had a speed of only 12 knots. And of course it was a passive homing torpedo. Even though its 95 lb Torpex warhead was small, the weapon did prove an effective one. 106 units were expended during the last year of the war in combat. It achieaved 33 hits with 28 being fatel to Japanese ships. Yes this number seems low, but you have to remember and think about just how many of those 106 torpedoes kept a US sub from becoming a loss. The 'true' value in the weapon is the fact it drove the enemy off.... |

Well that is interesting. Will it indeed arm itself after 250 yards in SH4? It might be handy to have a couple of those on board.

The USN considered motor and gear noises to be the most troublesome problem with the homing torpedoes, unlike the Germans, who regarded propellor noises as the worst problem. The Mark 18 was not a quiet design, so the Mark 28 used only one propellor and eliminated the tail gearing. There were four hydrophones on the curved part of the nose. In production from 1944-52 and remained in service until 1960.
