Default HMS Belfast (Pic heavy)

A few months ago I spent a couple of days in London, and took the time to see some things I'd never gotten to before. I'd seen the Belfast before but never been inside, it was a real treat to poke around inside a WW2 cruiser.

I've thrown in a couple of pictures that folks on here might like, various war memorials from around London and a couple from the Cabinet War Rooms.

The full-res 6016x4000 images are here - http://imgur.com/a/lISsg#0

Possibly the most English picture I could have taken. Heard a commotion above me while on the Embankment, and this was going on.

Submarine Service memorial.

The wreaths are from various submarine associations, if I'd known I would have left a SUBSIM one.

Royal Tank Regiment Memorial, just off Whitehall.

Interesting Admiralty map from the CWR

STEED, BossMark - yer money's in here!

It was a beautiful day, doesn't come across in the pictures but very sunny.

HMS Belfast.

Love the camouflage scheme.

The business end.

More below.

Service plaques on the quarterdeck.

Breech of one of the 6-inch guns.

Shows how cramped the turret is, can't imagine crewing one of these!

The interior has been restored to her 1940's condition. The Belfast served well into the 1960's

It's what you all came to see, folks!

A glance down into the magazine from 2 decks up.

We all know what this is!

Fire Control Director Table. A Primitive computer, in essence.

Top of the engine room. This must have been loud.

Full speed ahead, aye.

That's a lot of explody-bits.

The anti-flash systems were interesting.

Blackfriars Bridge and the Post Office Tower.

Can't imagine that's a comfortable seat for a six-hour watch.

Stand up straight and think of England, lads.

View from atop the fire director.

This radar system is from the 1950's I believe.

Inside the secondary armament turret.

Quick-firing 4-inch.

Old meets new.

Nice one of Himself-Atop-The-Column.

Disregard nasty interloping Canadian flag.

Great stuff; dined on Thames cruise boat myself. Did you make it to the Imperial War Museum too? The whole town's a blast for a history major! Gotta get back soon. Oddly, WW I admirals of the fleet, Jellico and Beatty, are buried side by side in St. Pauls Cathedral. They could'nt stand each other in life...British irony at its best!

1st class submarine and the crews that manned them memorial. Beautiful. The Belfast is still formitable sight as she sits even today. Pictures like this for someone like me continue to drive home the fact that many countries worked together for a greater good. Nice pictures. Thanks for sharing.

It comes through strongly when you're on board. Especially standing on the quarterdeck, a mild May breeze ruffling my hair as I look at the service plaque commemorating the Battle of the North Cape, where men fought, died, and burned in subzero snow and ice.

Chilling and inspiring at the same time.
