Default Avoiding DETECTION-Plz Help!

Hi Again Gang

With the help of MANY on this board...I am getting thru the game slowly, and in yes, newbie, arcade style to start at 0% realism, to get to know all the controls and game etc...

heres my MAJOR PROBLEM

in missions courageous, and especially in 4th, think its happy times, where I must travel all east thru the gibraltar straits...
I have read all the posts, and the walkthru tips for this mediteranean mission, but Im always 'found'

how come when I:

I go to :run silent, go deep, and under 3 knots, they all come right OVER ME, and drop charges,,,then I speed up and try to evade out, and its now fast enough,,,I evenutally flood and end it all,,,truied about seven times, these 2 missions,,,,

WHAT THE HECK AM I DOING WRONG

I really love this game, but seems no matter what I try, they FIND ME IN SILENT MODE, under 3 knots, and deep,,,how do I fix this?

thnx

maybe you should go under 100rpms

go in the F2 screen and and take a look the RPMs rather than the speed

what do you mean with "deep" ? how deep is this.

atm I have no other ideas... other's might chime in and give better and more info.

The Gibraltar strait is a bitch. It's a once-a-career-thing for me. I don't take it casually, and getting through it without detection is very unlikely. Remember, if you get detected, you can still get away! Use decoys! Listen to the hydrophone and when they drop the cans on you, turn and run! But as for avoiding detection, here are my tips:

- don't get near a destroyer in perfectly clear weather. This goes for convoy attacks, etc. In really high seas, DDs can't hear sh%t. If I was to do the Gibraltar crossing, i'd make damn sure it wasn't perfectly still.

- if you get visually detected, it's usually at a really long range (> 7km). When this happens, you have to 'clear the datum'. That is, dive, and change course and make a flank run for as long as you think you can. The DD will make a beeline for your last position, and he'll do it at flank. So he'll be deaf. You can take advantage of this by clearing the area. Listen to the hydrophone (or have your SO do it) - when he slows down to a medium speed, he can hear again so you should go silent. But by then he'll be searching in the wrong place (unless he hears you again).

- go really deep. If you're in trouble (e.g., 3 escorts are closing in), I go as deep as I possibly can. However, another trick is this - if you know they're closing on you, but you have a _bit_ of time before they get rigth on you, drop a decoy at say...50m - on your way down to 220m. Dive at 4kts, or even 5kts. Clear the datum. Then around 140m or so, go silent and hope that they take the bait. They often do. Or at least it will strip off one of the escorts....

As said before, go under 100 rpm and try to stay away from the destroyers. Do not keep the priscope up longer than a few seconds.

You may try hugging the African coast, but where it is deep. Keep in mind, what you are trying to do is the most difficult transit.

Does anyone do what I do and just run the entire straight as deep as I can safely go and make it through without being detected or coming up for air once?

Never done the Gibralter Strait so can't comment specifically on that, but I fully support Keelbuster's comment that calm waters can be deadly. I found out the hard way this morning by getting sunk by a destroyer after attacking a convoy. To make things worse it was only January 1940.

go thru the strait on the African side where it is deep. do so on slow two speed to avoid wake. be heavy with deck awash. torps set shallow for escorts. be at dark night only on surface to save oxygen and battery time if necessary. if spotted, maintain course very close to coast - escort may ground on shore. when escort closes within 1500 yards begin turn directly toward it head-on-use deck gun if possible then submerge to periscope while increasing speed to flank. hold scope zeroed on escorts bow, firing at 500 yards.(bungo straight style?) if it hits-good- if not, go to 200 metres, set speed level one with silent running and turn 90 degrees for la spezia. do not waste compressed air. if escort doesn't have sonar simply submerge without shooting and proceed thru straight. remember u r in iron coffin and must give it all for the fatherland or the italians. stealth is your weapon of choice. viel gluck herr kaleun
