U-36

I was reading a post in a different part of the forum, an a SH4 player I think said that he actually looked up his boat in real life to get it's history, I thought it was a slick idea so I thought I'd bring up that idea here in the SH5 section. My U-Boat is U-36 an this is what I found. The U-36 was a Type VIIA U-Boat, she was built at Kiel an commissioned on December 16th 1936, she served in the pre-war Navy in the North Sea an the Baltic Sea under Kapitänleutnant Klaus Ewerth. During the war she was commanded by Korvettenkapitän Wilhelm Fröhlich in the 2nd U-Boat Flotilla. In September of 39' she went on patrol in the North Sea for 3 weeks an sunk 2 steamers the British SS Truro, an the Swedish SS Silesia. U-36 also got the credit for laying the mine that sunk the Norwegian SS Solaas, she also captured the Swedish SS Algeria an took the Algeria back to Kiel. A British sub the Seahorse claimed to have sunk the 36 but missed w/ a 3 shot spread, supposedly 1 of the fish actually past right under 36 lucky on that 1. But her 2nd patrol she would not be so lucky. In November of 39' Naval High Command ordered U-36 an U-38 to scout the location for the Basis Nord, a secret German naval base for raiding allied shipping located off the Kola Peninsula. But the U-36 never made it out of the Norwegian Sea, she was spotted surfaced near the Norwegian port of Stavanger by a British sub the HMS Salmon who fired 1 torpedo at U-36 an sunk her taking all the crew down w/ her. Yeah I think its cool to look up the history of the boat your in command of, I'm in the Happy Times campaign an have been given a new boat a VIIC. Its the U-69 *pauses for the giggles lol*, I used that website you gave to look up my new boat. The U-69 is actually kinda famous it sank the US ship the Robin Moor, the first U-boat to sink an American ship. It was the first U-boat to mine African harbors because the Cpt an the XO were former merchant sailors who sailed those waters. She also had a unique emblem the laughing cow from laughing cow cheese lol. She went on 10 war patrols sinking 17 ships an crippled two other, it sounds like the Cpt. Jost Metzler an his crew were pretty famous for their successes. Cpt. Metzler ended up getting pretty sick an was transfered to a post on land an her next two Cpts were not as good as Metzler. She was sunk by depth charges from the British destroyer HMS Fame east of Newfoundland. The first Cpt. Metzler actually wrote a book on his time as Cpt of the U-69, called The Laughing Cow

Looked up the short career of U-666: Laid down in 1941 at Howalelswerke Hamberg And commissioned 26/8/42. Did four patrols under two commanders: KpLt Herbert Engel 26Aug42-9DEC42 ObLt Ernst Wilberg 10DEC42-10FEB43. Under Engel, the U666 damaged one Greek freighter of convoy SC122, the freighter Carrus, which survived. U666 was then attacked by a B-17 and forced to return to France. At AK7174 the U-666 encountered and blew up the frigate HMS Itchen with all 227 hands but three; including 81 survivors from HMS Polanthus and HMCS St. Croix which had been picked up! On 9MAY43 in the Bay of Biscay U666 was strafed by a Halifax which was shot down with 8 crew on board; at 1225 the same day north of Corrunna, Spain, U666 was again strafed by a Whitley but dived. On 5JAN44 while outbound from Lorient, the U666 was again strafed, made minor repairs and proceeded to join wolfpacks Rossbach, Hela, Rugen and Igel. The VIIC met her fate on 10FEB44 at 53.56N-17.16W ie AL-69 west of Ireland by depth charges from an aircraft from the Bogue escort carrier HMS Fencer with all hands. ObLt Wilberg commanded just 60 days. Her emblem, in reflection of her u-boot number designation 666, is the Fallen Angel. Highly decorated ObLT Engel survived the war and died in 1981.
