Default Russian city hit by meteorite

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-21468116

Apparently, a sizeable meteorite has just exploded over the city of Chelyabinsk.

Some story! I'm following this on Russian news myself, and there's certainly lots of interesting videos and images. Look here for example:

http://zyalt.livejournal.com/722930.html

Check out the shockwave from this thing

Only light injuries and a lot of blown-out windows though. No pieces of the meteorite found yet. They say it most likely exploded about 50km above ground, and came from a fragment of an asteroid that was expected to pass 28,000km from earth today (as reported here earlier: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-21442863 ).

I bet that was an awesome sight in person. You know, minus the bang.

NASA already said that the meteor was not related with one of tomorrow. And some people began to speculate that it may be a missile.
Oh well, tomorrow will be meteor day or something!

Hoooooooooolllyyyyyy

That....that was impressive, and quite terrifying to see, and that was just the shock wave from it exploding.

Lucky it wasn't another Tunguska, that would have been devastating.

How come it's always Russia that Meteorites are hitting?

There was that one in Siberia IIRC that was HUGE!

I couldn't imagine that happening over here. These people are lucky. Very lucky.

This is true, I stand corrected from my previous post, as this one came from a different direction. However, it is still a wierd coincident.

And it's still AMAZING!

SIGHTS TO BEHOLD

I've seen a fair sized meteor pass through our atmo on a flat trajectory...
The friction makes them extremely bright.

Wasn't the Tunguska event caused by a large chunk of ice and not a space rock?
