Hello all! Was invited by the welcome message to post an introduction here, so well I guess I will.

Been a player of SH4 for several years (had to go buy it after playing it on a friend's machine), and more recently SH5, after seeing it was down to $20 on Steam and had lost the "always online" requirement. I recall playing the original Silent Service on the NES, and it has come a very long way.

I had no idea there was such an active mod community for these! I'm interested in modifying both to be more realistic, as I've always enjoyed the full realism settings on SH4 (though those duds can be heartbreakers...).

SH5, at first blush, seems to have a bit more "shoot 'em up" feel to it, and I'd like to modify that to a more realistic setup as well. I'm sure there's some good advice here already posted about how to apply mods without horribly breaking the install, so if anyone can point me the right direction, I'd much appreciate it. Also might be interested in trying my own hand at it.

It also looks like there are some great discussions of WWII naval history here. Very cool, I've always liked history, and been fascinated in particular with WWII (well, hence the reason I like these games in the first place, I suppose.) Looking forward to reading some of those and the historical documentation I've seen linked there.
