Old Timer making another run in SHIII GWX3

Hey Guys!

After an absence of several years I decided, after reading "Iron Coffins" I would give SH III another run. I reinstalled it, added the 1.4 patch, put over it the GWX3 Gold and it works!

But it occurs to me that four or five years can make a difference and so I have a request for some update information.

Is it still necessary to put the disk in the PC or is there an OK workaround for that now?

I am still running XP with a 2G CPU. Are there major new mods I should be considering or should I sit tight with what I have considering my available computer power?

Any suggestions will be appreciated, especially if there is something nifty that has come along.

i have the SILENT HUNTER 3 'FOCUS' edition from AMAZON that does not have starforce on it. i now can play without the disc in my computer.

you can use GAMEBOOSTER or ALACRITYPC to help shut down background programmes. i personally used ALACRITYPC - I have a new pc now, with alacrity i was able to shut down nearly 100 background progs' which freed up loads in terms of cpu and memory on my old rig - which was similar to yours now.

with the mods, there are loads. i am at the moment on a laptop so i can not flag up my mod list. im sure others will be along soon with their help!

Starting with the disc. There are cheap new versions without Starforce and no requiring the disc, but it you want to use your old version there is an official approved method.

@Flag4: If you're using DBSM you don't need Dowly's NeinHerrKaleun. I removed all the "Jawhol Herr Kaleun"s.

I just ordered the disk. It is worth $10 to me not to fool around with the removal drill. I guess I am too old to enjoy workarounds if they can be avoided. However I don't mind spitting on my hands and retuning the main.cfg file, etc.

I'll be back with cries for help!

You know, I don't see h.sies hardcode fixes in here, thats definitely a must for SHIII, once I get my PC and get SHIII and 5 installed, I will definitely be re downloading H.sie's mod. Not too tough at all to install either.

Great fix/mod though, adds immersion, fixes things like watch officer, repair and flooding times are now real, forces you to be going slow or stopped to use periscope or a blur will occur, in choppy seas you have to be below like 16m and level to load tubes, and more

@ Sailor Steve however, doesn't GWX and or Commander have a no disk patch already in it? I seem to remember booting up SH3 every time without disk whenever I clicked on commander or GWX to play

...funny you should say. i have been tinkering with the idea thoigh not sure about all the fixes, not sure i want them all.

Yes, GWX comes with JSGME installed. It may not be the newest version, which is 2.6.0.157. My point is that JSGME works with any game.

I actually think you can choose which ones are opted in and out. But even if you don't, its worth it, I think all of them are, ups the immersion nicely. Its actually a nerve racking decision to decide to load external torps because of now I cannot dive in the middle of it and it takes me more than a few seconds plus I have to be a sitting duck

Actually Im not sure. I WANT to say yes, but I seem to remember being out at sea and installing just fine, find and read the thread, he has all info on there.
Oh and enjoy the added immersion/realism when you install it
