Yeah, I still remember my first time.

I also got it from Netflix and then couldn't bear to send it back until my very own copy arrived from Amazon. Two years later... my goodness, has it been that long already? Well, here I am. And I still get the itch to watch it on a regular basis. Hell, I watched at least some of it almost daily for the first month I had a copy in my possession. And I'm still not one bit tired of it.

Das Boot is not just a great sub film... it's also great war film, a great suspense film, a compelling human drama, and one of the best movies, period, of all time.

Enjoy yourself. You only get to see it the first time once.

Technically what you got from Netflix is the Director's Cut, which was the extended re-release from the late 90s (?). The original theatrical release from 1981 was never put out on DVD. Unless of course you've gotten both discs of the Blu-ray (do they have it yet?) in which case you've got both the 1981 version and the Director's Cut.

Most people here would probably say that the DC is the better of the two, because it more accurately reflects what a u-boat patrol was like (days or even weeks of seemingly endless tedium and frustration punctuated by relatively brief episodes of sheer terror). Along with that you get a much deeper exploration of the characters and their individual stories and relationship to each other.

BTW, if you find the Director's Cut all that and a bag of chips, and are left wanting even more, there's always the full 5 1/2 hour Uncut version to look forward to.

I remember my first time too. In the theater, almost thirty years ago.

I was in Nairobi and intrigued by the advert. Saw the movie. My ex arrived the following day. I told her, "I´ve heard there is a really good movie in town."

Frau K -- Indeed, the character development and the way personal conflicts are handled is exceptional. I was impressed with the use of Lt. Werner, a journalist as the POV character to whom things had to be explained.

Years later, I watched the TV series in France.

On my Friday nights online writing workshops, about once a year, I still trot it out as an example of how character development will overcome plot deficiencies (sail away, dive, shoot torpedo in a confined setting).

Amazon (obviously via the Subsim link).

It's the one with the green cover, called the Original Uncut version. All the episodes added together with no credits in between, just the way it should be.
