Default SH5 Improving

New SH5 skipper here. Want to say was a huge fan of SH3/SH4, and know this modding community is skilled and pretty motivated. I'm very happy to see what you guys have created picking up where the devs left off.

Just getting started adding mods and following the stickied SH5 Mod Guide for Beginners. Thanks for posting this and for making the mods

Default Interesting First Mission

I had an interesting first patrol tonight. Tasked with patrolling the area around Grimsby and eager to get into the theater I took a shortcut at best speed down the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal.

Intent on topping off fuel and provisions at Helgoand, I was surprised to find a small but very deep trench just southeast of the port. This is in contrast to the surrounding waters and I have not noted this on global charts, this may not exist in the real world, but it exists in SH5. I conducted some depth testing and then docked.

Within 12 hours prior to arriving on station, received two radio reports of merchants moving from Grimsby.

Upon arriving on station 55NM from Grimsby, weather was hazy. Began a series of dives to periscope depth, all stop, to listen for traffic, located several suspected merchant ships at port and a single ship louder, suspected to be moving back to the surface. Tracked contact executing 3 dives to periscope depth, sweeping, locating, updating map for bearing and position, plotted suspected course, surfaced to intercept. Eventually just before dusk sighted single freighter moving at high speed 11kts heading NW.

Increased to flank, made intercept about 15 min later, engaged with deck gun and dispatched ship in about 15 min with about 20AP and 5 HE rounds. After dispatching the merchant, recharged batteries and then reduced to patrol speed, made about 10 kts into Grimsby watchful for possible patrols. Did not encounter surface patrols.

Weather continued to be hazy and with light fog, at Grimsby located no less than 7 docked ships. 5 of which were markable via torpedo, no pier walls in the way. Engaged ships 1 torpedo at a time. Two of the freighters returned fire with 20mm. I checked several times for hull integrity damage, appears 20mm fire has no effect on hull integrity. After realizing no apparent danger from 20mm fire and having fired all 4 forward tubes, and rear loaded tube as well, surfaced and commenced deck gun fire. Continued to take fire from freighters. Somehow some way after several minutes lost all engines and motors, 100% damaged on all internal propulsion, yet hull integrity remained at 100%

Just before dispatching one of the freighters with deck gun fire, and its subsequent break up it did explode as I was passing close, this was about the time I lost all engines. I also was taking on water, with flooding on multiple sections.

I'm curious if anyone knows if when a ship explodes it does some sort of proximity damage, or if it is possible to sustain internal damage by 20mm but not take hull integrity damage?

I was unable to move and had to exit out but it was memorable up to that point. Still adding new mods from the beginner list but had to get in and sail a patrol.

In the stock game ships have hit points, and they explode when their hitpoints have gone. There are mods which make them take flooding damage and sink properly, but I can't think of them offhand. Don't worry, someone will be along presently to tell you.

Oh, and WELCOME ABOARD!

Come on Steve, even in the stock game the ships sink with compartments etc - not as well tuned as in SH3 though - but the mods make that behavior much better, just as with SH3/4.

It's not just hitpoints and boom. No sir.

Thanks guys... Its fun to be here. I had to inkling to reinstall SH3 to do a comparison. I'm amazed at SH3 even stock plays with much better realism than SH5 patched.

Anyway to the specific questions I was asking. What would you guys guess was the reason I lost all engine and took the internal damage to the motors and diesels while not taking any hull integrity damage. Would you happen to know if with SH5'd damage model it is possible to sustain internal damage without taking hull integrity damage?

Fair enough, but in my brief experience that was all I saw. But, as said, my experience was brief, and it's not like I haven't been wrong before.

Sorry.
