I could see this happening to military dogs. Dogs can sense tension. Highly intense volatile situations certainly will be picked up by a dog. I suspect repeated experiences will present a problem later.

Dogs have a relatively highly developed conscious mind, they have a decent level of intelligence, a variety of emotions they can perceive in others or feel themselves and express, they form social ties. I am surprised that there are still people who seriously believe that animals as highly developed like these would not show a complex intrinsic reaction (an inner life) to their environment and the experiences it gives them.

Dogs show more empathy than most of the people I've ever met in my life.

Brings back memories like this:

Quote:
Man and dog trusted each other to the point of their lives. And when 26 year old L/CPL Tasker’s stay on earth was cut short, his dog Theo’s life ended with a grief borne seizure over the loss of his best friend.Such is the depth of love between man and dog.
