A noob requesting some help

OK all, here's the situation:

I've recently ordered the Starforce-free version of SH 3 (via the Subsim link of course

) and after combing the many threads here, I find myself still a bit confused. What I'm after is some kind of step by step sequence for installing the game and mods. My intention is to use GWX and Commander on my Windows 7 machine, so if someone could nail down the process for me, that would be awesome.
I did read through the Windows 7 thread, but after seeing the variety of different issues, and the responses to same; it is a bit challenging to figure out the road to a trouble free install right out of the gate.
Any help would be most appreciated!
