Default Merchants shadowing me?

Hi guys,

New to SH5 and SUBSIM. I am playing through the campaign with TDW's mod, with about 83% (or something) realism.

I am currently looking for 5 AMCs along the Northern Patrol area, but have so far only located a few in port (at night, like little ducks in a row ), in which I dutifully opened holes.

After a refit I am headed back to my patrol area. I am being shadowed by two armed trawlers (blue on the map) regardless of depth, silent running, or direction. They hold, doing circles or slight zigzags, at 5+kms if I stop (surfaced or submerged) and wait. In the radio messages, in red, my position is being broadcast by the same two ships, again and again, no matter if I am above or below, moving or stopped.

Finally, after a while in real time (and limited to a small time compression due to ship proximity - grrr I just want to get back to my route with all my torps! ), I opened all the doors, and started calculating a firing solution . They run when I turn, and stay at 5+kms, turning madly making a hit (for me) unlikely.

Is this normal? Are they friendly shadows that are just calling the play for the coach back home? Are there blue-marked ships that I should "accidentally" be sinking? How do they know where I am regardless of the (admittedly basic) tricks I employ?

*Still working my way through some excellent tutorials and videos (Stoianm, and some others ) so apologies if it's been explained in superior detail. Will facepalm as required*

Hi TestyPilot,

This is a stock bug and can confuse new players.
The will stay 5km away from you all the time.

To get rid of them, save and reload. They will go back to following their waypionts then

Thank you Trevally - it worked!

I thought they might be spy ships, and had I had a shot I would've taken it. My luck the game would've considered them friendly (it apparently does) and I would've succeeded at a 5km snap shot .

Cheers!

Or not. Happened to me once when I saved in heavy fog and on reload I got clear sky with high visibility. I was stupid enough to believe that the DD will not notice me and I kept sailing forward being busy to search for a good radio station. When I noticed the first splash in the water around the sub it was already too late. Needed to load the game once again, this time ordering a quick dive right upon load. Never under estimate the AI with IRAI enabled.

Yes, you need to be careful with this.

If its a DD and you are used to them staying 5km away, beware. After the reload a better option for them may be to attack you rather that go back to waypoints.

As Stoianm would say "Evil IRAI"

Yes... or you can save... exit from game... unninstall IRAI... enter in Game.... surface... finish with your deck gun all the DDs around you... save... install again IRAI... and go back in Kiel... Doentiz will not know what you did and he will give you the Iron Cross - just jocking... you can have this sittuation and can happends as Zedi said and also as Trevally said... i had both behaviors in my game... but pay attention at Evil Irai

IRAI is not evil or anything else. It just fix the AI behavior. Actually, we are the bad guys, we are the dudes sent by another dude to kill humans. I like tis game only for the strategy part, never for the ideology or politics.

But.. I will gladly sink any ship filled with politicians. No rescue, no survivors. Kill on sight.

Besides, we are fighting for the wrong side. I excuse my moral self saying that there is not much fun manning the good guy´s subs. Hope someday there will be a simulation where you can command a DD also, would be terrific online fun.
