BTW I just noticed two errors in the graphic I posted. Andromeda and Earth Final Conflict should be in the left most column as they were created by Gene Roddenberry. I know I got it bad...

i thought the most recent star trek was excellent.

it had a good story line, and fantastic casting.

and it did a lot to bring in a new generation of fresh fans to the franchise and opened up a whole untouched realm of new directions for the star trek series

I too thought the reboot was very well done - and the issue of "canon" was dealt with very cleverly, I thought, since the actions of the villain traveling back in time essentially created an alternate past and timeline for the entire ST universe and the most important characters. Now the rebooted version is free to go where no ST has gone before without contradicting the accepted canon of any of the other incarnations.

And I agree, the casting was brilliant. Karl Urban - who I could not have imagined in the role prior to seeing him do it - totally nailed his performance as a younger but no less crotchety McCoy, and the guy who played Kirk... well, even watching the movie I didn't quite see it until towards the end and there was a moment when he sat down in the captain's chair on the Enterprise and it wasn't even verbal, just his movements and expressions, and all of a sudden I thought, OMG he just became the James T. Kirk that I remember.

And don't even get me started on Spock. Also - crap, I can't remember names today but the guy who played Scotty, loved him as well.

EDIT: What, no X-Men in the Geek Periodic Table? FOR SHAME.

green girl reminded me of one of my GFs in High School, only not green - usually.

Bah contradictions? Nero blows up one Federation ship and Starfleet's technology jumps ahead 100 years? Why is the Enterprise-Nil now the size of the Enterprise-D? EAS has a great article on that! Oh and why is it powered by a Brewery? Is booze a substitute for Deuterium now in this alternate Abramsverse? Good news there is finally a shuttlebay that can fit the Delta Flyer! Unfortunately it could carry a squadron of them... and I'm surprised it didn't...

Speaking of the ship Nero blew up? WTF is wrong with her registry? 0514! Didn't someone tell them that when you write out numbers you don't include zeros before numbers greater than zero. It's not like we have not seen Federation Ships with three digit registries before!

Spock was good but Scotty? Simon Pegg was a lousy choice. Did you know that Paul McGillion tried out for the role but was rejected for Scotty...

I guess the producers felt so bad they did give Paul a role. I think he is credited as "Guy in Hat" or something. At least he gets to tell Kirk to F off.

Bruce Greenwood was also great in the movie, I would have rather seen the whole movie with him playing Pike commanding the Enterprise than this "New Kirk"...

Eh, there are only so many story lines in the entire history of storytelling to which the human psyche will respond in any meaningful fashion. The details vary, but the primary plot points don't change much.

If you went through the entire history of sci-fi I'm sure you would find that the ones quoted above have been used over and over again, sometimes to great affect and sometimes not. Mostly it depends on the skill of the storyteller(s), and assessing that in any particular case is always a subjective matter. To each his own.
