Default Saved by the Kriegsmarine!

So tonight I hit a convoy west of Spain. The usual assault. Took out the heavies, including 2 tankers, 2 large cargoes, each time diving to avoid the escorts.

On my last evasion, I noticed a straggler on the hydrophone. In fact, this convoy had been damaged by someone before as there were several burning ships in it!

So I maneuvered into position to pick off the straggler with my last torpedo.

I hit it, but it did not sink! And along comes another escort chugging back from the convoy to help them, so I headed north, pointing my stern at both of them.

After I was sure the escort had left, I surfaced and charged at the crippled Ore Carrier. I opened up with the 105 at 5000m, and it only took a dozen or so hits before it went down.

Just as it started sinking, I saw a shadow beyond it! That damn escort was heading back again, about 9000 meters away!

I decided to run for it. So I go to flank speed and come about, heading north again.

Suddenly, WHAM! We are hit and flooding! Oh no!

I put my damage control team to work and dive. I'm afraid to go too deep now that I'm damaged, so I settle for 100m.

On my way down, my sonar man detects another warship contact headed our way from the north! Great, just what I need!

The destroyer works me over pretty good. No damage from the depth charges, but three of the passes were close enough to rock us pretty violently.

And then, I hear gunfire! Strange, I think, since it's not night time so the destroyer is not firing star shells...

The gunfire goes on for a couple of minutes, and then the escort contact turns into a grey sunken ship on the map!!!!!

So I come up to periscope depth, and what should I see heading my way but another beautiful Type IX u-boat!!!

I guess radioing in all those contact reports as I hit the convoy paid off! I was saved by the Kriegsmarine!

That's great how that turned out Steve. I'll remember to radio contacts in the future.

I don't know, the game just does it. I have frequently heard cannon fire after hitting a convoy at night and I know, from my free-cam days of watching, that that is the destroyers firing star shells. You can hear many things going on on the surface, like ships exploding, engines, etc.

I was at a bout 100m and the destroyer was almost directly overhead. I actually watched his hull go by through the observation scope and saw pieces of him fall into the sea as the friendly sub blasted him.

I'm not sure that radioing in contacts actually does anything. Every time I radio in a contact you just get a message from BdU saying, "Thanks, we logged the contact, all other assets are committed, attack on your own."

I think it was just a coincidence. Only one other time have I seen aircraft attack a convoy after I radioed it in.

I think it is just coincidence.

Ya lucky bugga

The only time you have a chance of receiving help from a radio report is if you are within visual range of what you are reporting.

The next qualifying criteria is whether anything is within their radius/range to be able to assist.

Only after both parameters are completed satisfactorily does the game engine throw that imaginery dice to decide whether help/assistance is sent.

Does sending a contact report alert the enemy in SH3? For that matter, does depth sounding also? I never do it just in case but it'd be handy to know if anyone's learnt the hard way (or not).

I'm pretty sure enemy AI does not react to your depth sounding.

Don't know about sending radio messages.

Is the BdU radio response accurate? In other words, if they radio back and say "All other assets are committed", does that mean no help is available, or is this just a canned message?

Because there is never a radio message that says, "Thanks! Help is on the way!"

Steve
The response message is no indication of whether help will arrive or not.

Awesome! I'll keep sending those contact reports then!

Whenever I get a visual I send a contact report.

Guess it paid off this time!
