Luck obviously played a part in preventing something far more serious happening but the biggest part was obviously his flying skills

True Jim. Luck only favors the prepared. He was obviously prepared and well skilled pilot to recognize his dilemma in a split second saving the other half of that second to correct the problem.

Technically speaking, I think he did smack in to the water. Hard enough to lose a fearing. It is amazing that he was able to keep the prop out of the water. That would be hard to recover from.

I think this pilot just earned the "lowest altitude record" for such a race.
