Default Greed Kills

Here's what happened....Got a msg about a convoy and immediately headed to intercept. I spot the lead ship of the convoy far off on scope. I go to silent running and creep in. I see the DD protecting the convoy 1st. He doesn't notice me so I continue my creep in as the ships start to pop up. I'm in great position. I'm popping the cope up every now and then to get my line of attack right.

So I make it to the convoy undetected and fire two at a large cargo...before they impact I veer to the right and send two more at the freighter in front of the cargo ship. I immediately swing a 180 and head the other way...tic, tic, tic, tic, tic etc...boom...boom..(yeah!! She's goin down)....a couple minutes later...boom....boom (yeah she's going down!!)

2 kills...I was all set up for a stern shot but waited to see the effects of the 1st shots. No need...I should have continued away from the convoy. But no...I' get greedy.

I swing to run parallel (sp?) to the now moving convoy after the 2 ships I hit go down I go to normal running ahead 1/3 so I can re laod. As I'm doing this the lead DD protecting the convoy has no clue where I am. I reload one...and almost get a second fish in the tube...All of a sudden...I'm being pinged. I swing the scope a full 360 to see if I missed anyone....yup. A DD just about on top of me. I didn't spot him @ all. Not once did I pick up the 2nd warship. needless to say I was depth charged. The 2nd DD came in and they sent me to the locker.

I could have gotten away with 2 kills...and my boat. Got greedy and lost everything.

Starting new career toady...Sad to see my people/boat go.

Actually...Now that I think about it...It wasnt the greed...it was me not being thorough. I should have Identified all the ships in the convoy/location before I did anything.

Steep learning curve...

Thats it. I've done that mistake before. Just yesterday on my 6th patrol (first with GWX3) I hit an empire cargo, then afew days later I hit a Latge cargo but I was still wanting more. So I had already completed my patrol and was slowly making my way to the supply ship, (I like staying out for months on end) but I decided to head south. (I was located just north of Ireland but due to HEAVY ASW task forces I had to abort) When I reached south Irland I received 2 different contact reports:
1) Medium size enemy convoy 4kts headed east
1) Large enemy convoy 4kts headed east
So I decided to head west. (I get in front of convoys then cut engines, letting them come to me) By the time I was just in front of the convoy I had already done my recon:
2 Black Swan's 1 Sub (British?)
I blew the lead DD out of the water, then I hit an Ore Ship (Broke it's back)
I then hit large cargo (must have had ammunition aboard, Obliterated)
Then I hit large merchant (Sunk 10 min later) By this time the second Black swan was just about on me, I fired on it but missed (may have hit something else, I did hear a bang) So the convoy has half way past me, I wanted more. I fired everyhing I had, Hit a small tanker but missed the destroyer again.
I then realized I overstayed my welcome and lazily made my exit. As i'm smoking a cigarette I hear grinding followed my Massive Blasts (DTS stereo LOUD) followed my MEEEDIC!! and finaly my demise. A fitting end to U-52

I guess it also depends on the experience of the pursuers too
And the number of pursuers

At least we get "do overs".
Every patrol is a learning experience.
Good hunting in your "next " life.

I totally agree with this statement. It also helps if you try and note everything down from your patrols, times you dived, times you surfaced, how many DCs were dropped in a single attack run, distance travelled submerged, etc etc. This all helps to build a complete knowledge of your UBoat and what it can and cant do.And when air attacks become a serious menace I even used to note down the sunrise and sunset periods which can be useful when defending against planes.

Could never get caught like that.
It takes my guys 24 minutes to reload a tube, and the boat has to be at least 50 meters down (usualy 100) for them to do it, AFTER DISENGAGING.
