Default Disappointed but hopeful

First impressions for me are that even with the gorgeous graphics this game is never going to match SH3 for playability and is going to need some serious modding to address its short-comings

So far I feel like I've got no influence or input at all, I just wander about with nothing to do, no momentary decisions to make. I can't listen for ships for myself, I can't ask what the depth is or order a specific depth to dive to - choosing an icon is not the same as choosing the depth to go to yourself. I get told we are in shallow water, but what I want is to be able to check it moment by moment for myself, when I can see we might be approaching a risky area, to have MY finger on the pulse of what is going on so to speak. There's no compass so I don't know where I am heading or how to work out where other ships are in relation to me. And what happens when you find a target - is that 'point and click' IT?

I hate the ladder thing; faffing about trying to get up or down that smoothly and in one go
is annoying. I am not interested in small-talk with the crew... Argh. It is all so simplified and basic, not what I expected. There was so much that was right with previous versions of the game - why change?

I am still getting out of Kiel on my first mission - except I am not sure what that mission is unless its the general instruction to attack British ships - which I could have worked out for myself
.
Yes I am having a moan. I am genuinely disappointed.
Maybe these things I think are missing are there but hidden and I am in for a nice suprise, but I don't think so. I have read Uncle Neils review, looked at the manual, such as it is, and poked about. If I have missed something, please tell me and cheer me up! However, it is early days, and maybe I will adjust but really, my hopes are pinned on the modders. They can turn this game around. It really makes SH3 shine out for the all-time best of the series. Way to go SH5

Have a look in the SH5 mods section
Get your self Darkwraiths UI
And Church's SHV 1.01 Keyboard Commands v1.1

Gives you some feeling of normality
And did you request a mission

There was a walkthrough somewhere also - from Neal I think if could only find it

Oops here

I know how you feel
My crew must think am continually slaughtered or drugged the amount of times have missed the ladder and teeter one way then the next

As Bigboy says - head over to the mods forum. After I installed a few mods to give me more control of the boat, things looked up.

Also I've just used promotion points to boost my hydrophone operators skills, really makes a difference, seems a little more like the old days now as I was begining to worry that it wasn't working properly.

One thing though... Did you know that if you hold down ctrl a new set of controls appears including precise speed and depth? I actually prefer this to the old set.

All in all after less than a week playing SHV, I love it. Sure it's not SHIII with GWX , but I am enjoying it a lot.

So stick with it is my advice.

I get the feeling the game was released before the devs had finished it.

Quote:
I can't listen for ships for myself
You can, by clicking on the hydrophone and using [Home] & [End] to turn the direction (mouse wheel also works).

Quote:
I can't ask what the depth is or order a specific depth to dive to
Just to the left of the standard depths (surface/periscope/dive/crash dive) options is the depth guage (in digital format). holding [Ctrl] expands it to greater depths.

Quote:
There's no compass
The lack of the ability to ping for depth under keel, and a compass is unforgivable. These should be in the game!!! Luckly there are a few mods that add these back in.

Quote:
And what happens when you find a target - is that 'point and click' IT?
There are a few way to target ships now (3 way i think, although i've only used 1 of them).
I like the new system for aiming torpedoes, Not the numbers thing or the point and click. but the true manual targeting. where you use the stadimeter, AOB, Speed etc. It's like using voice commands.

Quote:
I hate the ladder thing
The ladder... Yes takes some getting used too. im now on my second patrol and i no longer have any problems getting up and down the ladder. (well sometime i have to step away and retry but it not too bad now).

Quote:
I am not interested in small-talk with the crew... Argh
Nor me.... I can see this becoming annoying after a few restarts as you'll just be going through the same story over and over again. Even while on the same patrol they have nothing new to say. my second patrol the had 1 extra line to say....

I have to agree that SH5 is not as good as SH3, but i can see that SH5 if patched and modded can be SH3 GWX with really nice graphics. Thats what im hopping for anyhow.

I think this pretty much sums it up for me with one exception.

I would not mind 'small talk' with the crew if it wasent repetative and redundant.

I saw a mudcrab the other day....
