Probably the fierce battle of the Tepoto Atol http://static.panoramio.com/photos/original/16790.jpg. Or the Europa Moon, one big ocean where you never surface.

Just kidding. I think they mean the Mediteranean, Black Sea (not sure why, the NMS Delfinul was more than enough) and Gulf of Mexico. Think about it, those were very tough or long assignments and were reserved for the best kaleuns (or the ones which Hitler didn't like).

Perhaps engagement in non anticipated combat, early detection , suprise encounter etc en- route to pre designated patrol area, bears the resolve to unlock somewhat diffrent sequence of follow up events, ie aiding support to engagment somewhere near, picking up agent as closest sub, new patrol orders, or simply unlocks the captains room locker, waffle waffle, i fear its mere open speculation, indeed i do stand to be corrected, assumption is not my forte, iam affraid.

Here's what I hope, from a rivet counter bastard standpoint: I hope that they mean that if you've proven yourself as a top tier commander, they'll send you on missions such as Operation Drumbeat. That's what I hope. But if we have XBOX unlockable crap, I will rage.

How poignant to quote a post from our illustrious host, from waaaay back in early May 2007 (full thread here)...

Damage model improved from SH4, now your sub will flash red and make a coughing sound when its health is in jeapordy. Don't worry about finding any unused sound files or interface files from SH3, SH4 on the disk--you won’t be able to access the disk. And no "A key" crash, at last the keyboard has been taken out of the equation. If you are unhappy with SH4's manual salvo set-up, rejoice, SH5 will allow you to launch all 20 torpedoes at once, simply press L2-R1-O-X-^-X. Cloaking and other combo moves can be unlocked by warping from one arena to the next, sinking 200,000 tons per mission.
Neal, it's becoming obvious that you are more in know than you let on.

Maybe they mean you get the key to the executive washroom.

Seriously though area unlocks? WTF? Is this a sim or a platform X-Box port?

The question I've got is around this statement:
Quote:
the A.I. will adjust its reactions to the behavior of the player.
I'd be very interested to see what this means.

That MUST mean the game will take into consideration your tonnage sunk and that you'll get access to the type IX later in the war. Of course this type will make you able to reach new patrol grids.

And I must say I agree with what Mookie has stated, BTW.

I don´t like the word "unlock" in this game, perhaps this is for boats and new bases based in the war progress , but the possibility of "Walls " in the ocean closed grids or missions like in a arcade game is a game killer and worrying for a subsim like SH .

That whole unlock areas thingy shouldn't be an issue:
Quote:
I believe that the UBoat can go to the Southern Hemisphere or at least to the Pacific region ... no? Knowing from the war history with the involvement of UBoat in the Pacific (like SH4 UBoat Missions), will there be a feature (or perhaps a surprise??) that we will encounter Japanese Navy/convoys who ask for UBoat support?

While the player is still free to go as he pleases, there is no plan to include the “Monsoon boats” in the release version of SH5.
Perhaps you need to unlock the single missions or something. This may be what they ment by "unlocking areas" in the first place.

I don't see why everyone is getting up in arms over this. The "unlocking areas" quote did not come from Ubi or the developers. It came from a third party source who may or may not know anything about the Silent Hunter series. We've seen how wrong some of these game magazines can be in describing past SH games.

Wait and see before you all get in a righteous outrage.

Ubi's press release said:

Quote:
"ENEMY REACTIONS: Open new locations, upgrades and resupply possibilities, while the Allied ships adjust dynamically to your approach. Your actions will directly impact the evolution of the campaign."
I take that to mean that new ports will be added as the campaign progresses, as per history.

Yes...I agree...sometimes third party writers/reviewers don't know what they are talking about...
