Vera Lynn! I thought she was dead.
I know this isn't U-boat related, but I saw this story yesterday.
http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/article/695717 Probably not many Americans have even heard of her. I like her music. Thanks to jimbuna's gramaphone packages, I have quite a bit of her music on my gramaphone to listen to on those long, lonely Atlantic patrols. I can imagine how her songs made the soldiers think of home. It is funny, but I heard of her through the Pink Floyd song when The Wall was released. You know the line..."Does anybody here remember Vera Lynn?" I've always remembered that. Then I saw her interviewed briefly in the World at War documentary(the one about Burma IIRC). I've really never heard much of her music, except for a snippet here or there, until I got into SH3. ![]()

Vera Lynn is about ninety years old I think. When war broke out she was sitting in her parents house in Upney Lane, Barking listening to the Chamberlain broadcast. I have to walk down that street everyday to the station to go to work, I wonder what house she lived in?

It's a funny note from my youth - The Byrds did a cover of We'll Meet Again on their first album.
That's an awesome thing. Thanks, Sharkbit, for pointing it out, and thanks Laufen for the link to some of her best songs. ![]()

She was even in the german news on Monday for leading the british music charts kicking the Beatles or the Arctic Monkeys to second place.
They showed a short interview with her. She lives in France now.

The British forces sweetheart bless her,she regularly toured the R&R areas doing shows to entertain the troops, especially in the far east in Burma, where many troops thought they were fighting the forgotten war.
She also up till recently visited ex-forces troops in old soldiers rest homes just to chat, and she raised money for them and campaigned on their behalf raising issues that they had with MP's. A true star ![]()

Just listen to the lyrics; it hits right to your heart; imagine being in N. Africa or on a ship undergoing fire, killing all around you, one or two of your best friends blown apart before your eyes. Now listen again.
Marvelous. A bit better than hip hop, IMHO Or rap: "com' on, M.....F.....ers, S....w that b......" etc. Thanks for the info.LzZ

Listening to her now via Youtube. Beautiful, inspiring voice.
Which gramophone packs have her music? I have so much gramophone music in my folder, but for some reason it seems like I hear the same songs every patrol. I prefer the period/mood pieces and not the martial music. |

She was a strong influence on Roger Waters, who had his father die during WW2.
"Does anybody here remember Vera Lynn Remember how she said that We would meet again one sunny day." - The Wall, Pink Floyd.

I always liked this one Dr. Strangelove. MY FAVORITE:
![]() There is no doubt in my mind - these people were the GREATEST generation. End of discussion. They made so many sacrifices for us to enjoy today ... and now. I have serious doubts on today's generation making sacrifices for the good of the all. Today's generation are useless dirt bags compared to her and her generation. These people from the 40's & 50's are dropping like flies too fast. We need to record there perspective, soon. Yeah, Vera Lynn. What a great gal at 90 something! Her generation at least had brains and common sense.

There's a number of Vera Lynn tracks as well as a ton of period pieces as well as some martial music. You can leave those out of your gramaphone file if you want. That's what I do. I just pick and choose what tracks I want on my gramaphone, put them in my gramaphone file and let SH3Commander randomize them. I'm not too die hard when it comes to the music I listen to on my gramaphone while on patrol though. I have some modern stuff too. Nothing like breaking the boat drinks out and listening to Jimmy Buffett when patrolling the Carribean. ![]() ![]()
