I was in the midst of a decent career. I was even leading the captains' tonnage charts, won a few medals and was given a Balao for my efforts. I headed to Japan for a recon mission east of the Bungo Straights (TMO career) in March, 1943. My assignment was to sneak into a harbor east of the Bungo Straights and take pictures of any carriers. The harbor was well guarded. I took my boat in at dusk. The harbor's defenders were not patrolling, but were stationary, and I knocked out 3 destoryers, 1 subchaser and one other warship, all at very long distance compliments of Nicolas' Easy AoB mod.
One Taiho was at anchor, and I took photos per orders. Mission complete, and I still had plenty of fuel left with 3 forward and 1 aft torpedoes in reserve. Then I noticed my boat would not move, and when I tried to surface, it resulted in some damage to the boat. Not to worry, I thought. I will take out the Taiho, and figure out the problem once the Taiho goes under. I lined up the anchored Taiho at 2,000 yds and fired 2 shots. They ran deep even though I set them to run 10 feet above its keel. They missed. No big deal. I had a good mission and I can hit the Taiho on my way out with my remaining aft torpedo. Not so fast! It ain't over till its over! I tried to surface and return to base. I was sunk by a destroyer immediately. I thoght I had got them all! I replayed the mission from the point before I fired the torpedoes at the Taiho. I missed again, for no reason I could fathom, as I had a lock on the Taho per the Attack Map. This time I did not surface. I used the free camera to look around the boat while it was submerged, as I could not manuever it, as mentioned above. There it was. A submarine net. I ran smack dab into a submarine net! I tried going forward, backward, fast slow, etc. and could not get free. When I surfaced this time my boat was badly damaged and men were down on the deck. Of course I was sunk again. Here is how you can tell you may in a submarine net. The pic on the computer screen on the Nav. Map screen starts vibrating (ever so slightly) when you are zoomed in, plus you cannot move the boat forward or backward. Last edited by I'm goin' down; 09-17-09 at 11:21 PM. |

Great story. During every patrol I hide and sneak on the harbours on my route. Most of the time there are some lone merchants, 2k-6k ton, and small patrols. Never see any net, in fact I wasnt even awere of those excistens

Hello? Anyone home?
![]() You assume, as your post implies that you have had experience with those nasty submarine nets, that EVERYONE has the misfortune to be trapped in one. I went back to the same port today, in broad daylight. I snuck into the harbor. Sunk one destroyer that was recorded as a kill and sunk another that the was not recorded (I have never encountered that before). Then I hit the Taiho and a light carrier, both anchored, putting them under. I snuck away at a crawl, dodged a patrolling destoryer, dodged airplanes near Japan, and when I was on my way to Midway ran into a large convoy. What to do? Bring a fight to the convoy, or play it save and get a medal. I had 4 forward and 1 aft torpedoes in reserve, so I attacked. (They don't pay me to save my ass just so I can write war stories to enthrall Subsim captains!). I plotted the convoy's course, set up ahead, and sunk two Akita freighters in a midnight attack. I was in the process of bringing the boat around to fire my aft torpedoe when the sound on loud pinging told me the party was over. Time to exit, stage right. I crash dived safely but was sunk by depth charges at 300 + feet. My Balao would not dive to 400 feet fast enough! I had been on hot streak, even though it was a replay. Two carriers (17,000 and 11,000 tons), two destroyers, two Akita Maurus, and finally, one Balao (with me in it) - gone forever. Last edited by I'm goin' down; 09-17-09 at 11:23 PM. |

I remember my first experience with SubNets. Was sneaking into Manilla to do some photo recon, it was very stormy so I had a bit of trouble with destroyers (one emerged out of the fog at 200m! Thought I was doomed, but he must have been as surprised as me.) I was nearing the Carriers, decided that I might as well raise my Observation Scope, and as it's halfway up I see one right infront of me. I had never seen one before and so ordered back emergency. Stopped no more than five feet from it.
