Default Kiel Kanal Katastrophe

Came back to SHIII after almost a year. Installed, patched and modded to GWX Gold and SH3 Commander, with other funky mods.

Chose random captain Hans Berger, put him in Kiel in a type II. Made a big show of leaving port for the shakedown cruise.

Set navigator to kiel canal waypoints. Watched the scenery for about 1/2 hour, then thought "bugger this" and hit tc up to 128x. Two minutes later, death screen. U 8 Lost with all hands 3 hours into the game in the middle of the fricking canal.

If my navigator and watchman weren't already dead, I'd have had them shot!

Did you set the waypoints while you were exactly on the dot marked on the map at the entrance to the canal? If you're not right on it it's gonna have your boat parked in the high street at some point.

Kiel Katastrophe

Hving run aground after setting the course from the wrong spot the next time I set the course before moving fom the dock. I then set off and sank after crashing into one of the harbour patrol boats!

Since then I have paid more attention and not left it to the "autopilot".

We all laugh at how Bernard is utterly useless but one thing he excels at is being a scapegoat. You just can't touch him on that.

Without Bernard to blame, life would not be worth living

If there isn't a waypoint set yet on the map, whenever you press the Kiel Kanal buttons it takes the current location as starting point iirc. To avoid that set a waypoint exactly on those marker points. But I allways check the route on the map for potential Bernard-wants-to-visit-mommy events. Well, I'm stationed in Willemshaven now with my career, but you know.

Default Well, that was my problem...

I left the dock, pottered about the harbour for a bit admiring the pretty ships, and then had the navigator plot the kiel canal waypoints. I should have realised something was up when he tried to run me through one of the bridge pylons.

I tried again navigating the canal from stationary in the dock, and it worked perfectly.

Can't blame Bernard for this Kauleins blunder.
