Default Theater Poll Request

Now that the cat's pretty much out of the bag, can we get a poll of people who want another U-boat sim or would like to see the developers take another crack at the Pacific theater...or both?

I know U-boats are popular in Europe and since the development is in Europe it's not surprising to see U-boats. But this does not negate the fact that people in the US are also interested in their own legacy.

Also, why is there this tendency to focus on U-boats over Fleet boats? All other venues (armor, aircraft, grunts) tend to have more of a balance regardless of where the development is done. There were more warships involved in the Pacific and large naval engagements where subs played an important role. Both theaters had lots of merchants but the Atlantic thinned down to mostly merchant convoys late in the war. Both sides had air patrols to contend with but only the Pacific had a large number of carriers.

I don't get the attraction of the Atlantic in terms of what the action focused on. Sinking nothing but merchants gets a bit routine after awhile.

I must say I'm pretty happy they've confirmed they're going back to the Atlantic u-boat battleground.

U boats are more popular and atractive (atleast in my opinion) since it is about german navy (witch is mainly uboats) versus everyone elses mercahnt and military navys(apart from italy and few other countries (one of witch my own). It gets harder as time flies by.

Further more the pacific theater is more popular because of its surface ships (carriers, battleships so on) and their submarines are more or less left behind the scenes (though it cant be argued their great contribution to the war effort)

In the end everything comes down to surviving another they as hunters became hunted.

Not to be too snarky, but the poll on the choice of theater has already been done: the SH4 sales figures vs the SH3 sales figures.

To add my two cents, I'd go for the Atlantic anytime, because that's where the submarine war really got interesting. In fact, the Atlantic WAS the submarine war. Or, to put it the other way around, the only war that mattered in the Atlantic was the submarine campaign. Everything there was developed with the Uboat war in mind - tactics, countermeasures, new weapons and devices... The destiny of a country - the UK - was at stake here and the fight was really fierce, ruthless. That's the reason for the higher interest for the ATO, I believe.
In the Pacific, surface task forces were the name of the game, with aircraft carriers as superstars. Of course, submarines from both sides saw their share of operations, crews fought and died bravely here too, but by no means can we speak about an all-out submarine war here. The very concept of 'fleet boat', i.e. submarines that should have accompanied and protected large surface fleets, proves what were the priorities in the strategic game.
So, in terms of challenge, I guess a submarine game - if done right - would be much more interesting in the ATO, with its wolfpack tactics, BdU coordination and an enemy that gets stronger each year - than in PTO, where US boats hunted alone, against a Japanese navy that put little threat toward the end of the war.
Bottom line, one week from now hopefully we'll know what SH5 will look like, and then maybe all of us will be surprised. The long wait is nearing its end

Personally, I'm torn on which theatre I prefer. I loved the Pacific in Silent Hunter and now I love the Atlantic in Silent Hunter III(my machine can't handle SHIV so no idea about that).

I usually prefer playing as the 'underdog' in PC games. The Fleet boats had lot's of problems and had to hold the line in the beginning, but with the might of the US Navy helping to distract the IJN they were hardly alone. The U-boats really were all by themselves against the weight of the Allied forces. It's really amazing that they sank so much with so few boats.

I think Ubisoft confirmed on their upcoming releases page that it was u-boats in the Atlantic, and all new coding. May be wrong though.

Is this true? Thumbs up if it is tho.
It was confirmed a good while back that SH5 was to be an Atlantic theatre based U-boat game.

The question is......what sides will be playable and will there be a Pacific theatre addon in the future.

Default Throw in the Brits

Would be great to have the U-Boats + maybe the Brit boats out of Malta. Able to play both sides.

Since i´ve played both SH3 and 4 for a while, i can say ill stick to the Atlantic. I dont know what it is, but it has something special and also i like more the Kriegsmarine an its U-Boats than the US Navy (guess Das Boot did a number on me ).
I´ve got bored of SH4 after a week but im still playing SH3 so that´s got to mean something.
