What the hell?! They have a dentist surgery on the list! Its also scary that the number of sites on the uber secret blacklist has jumped from ~1000 to ~2300 in only a few months.

Ther is no recourse, if you're on the list thats that, you can't appeal it to anybody. Of course, you wouldn't know you're on the list til its too late.. All designed to "keep us safe". What a load of crock. I'm hoping like hell that someone launches a court challenge asap..

"Con"-roy's claiming its a fake but the way he's been making threats about if you publish it you'll go to jail kinda makes you wonder.
Stupid thing about this list, is it only needs One person to complain about a site to the ACMA to get it put on the blacklist!!

Not that I object to child pornography sites being blacklisted I have to wonder what is the purpose of keeping the list "secret"?

Well thats just it, August! I don't think anyone in the world would object to blocking child porn sites.

But this list includes the Queensland tourism bureau, a dentist's practice, and the 38th most popular site in oz, which does happen to be a porn site.

The other issue is that you can be fined $11000 per day for hosting a link to a blacklisted site, however nobody is allowed to know what counts as an illegal site, because there is no publication of them. Wouldn't it be nice to be hit up for half a million or so bucks for hosting a dental surgery website which somehow is classed as offensive and illegal..

There's an update to the article where they say that this is not the actual list
http://www.news.com.au/technology/st...014239,00.html

....or is it?

Quick, shut down the internet before anyone sees anything

Seriously, why is common sense in such low supply when it comes to government?

Stephen Conroy has a great habit of backtracking and denials as soon as anything unpopular can be attributed to him.

When you include the ACMA's angry, blustery defensive position I suspect that we're being blatantly lied to here.

Besides, if it was just kiddie porn sites, and they were already blacklisted and could not be accessed from oz, why not publish the list, to put our minds at ease and prove there is nothing more... sinister going on?

I doubt it's anything really sinister. I think the vast majority of politicians really are trying to do what they think is best for everyone most of the time. Unfortunately, they often suffer from the "conceit of the annointed". That is, they believe that because they are in a position to make decisions they are qualified to make them.
I think they honestly believe that they know better than their constituents, and sometimes they have to pull things like this for our own good. Of course, when they inevitably fail or make things worse, we know what happens.

No doubt the belief is that keeping the list secret will destroy the market for such detestable media. Unfortunately, while such efforts have a 100% chance of eroding civil liberties to some degree, they will ultimately fail in their purpose. But that won't stop them from making new legislation in the same spirit.

Looks like Krudd wants us to have the same internet as his lords and masters in China give their people - Im wondering how long before the Liberal's and the Green's suddenly find their websites on the list!
