The tommies scuttle their own ships?

Just some moments ago, i encountered a large convoy in the middle atlantic.
I had some falke torpedoes on me so i decided to take out the escorts first.
Thankfully there were only 4 destroyers.
I took out the destroyers sucessfully and i played a bit with the merchants.
I exhausted all my internal torpedoes so i emerged when the rest of the ships gone to reload and pursuit them.
When i emerged i spotted a stationary HMT Aquintania or something.
I approached and before i got near enough, the ship sunk without explanation...

Any tips?
