You don't have to "study" it and then "appreciate" it.
Listen, enjoy and "feel" it.
At least that's what I did with Frank Zappa!
And the great plus (compared to classical) is that you get some great humor along with good music!
Anyway, back to the begining. Start listening with your taste as a starting point and you might find yourself taking a long and rewarding journey...

I had the opportunity to hear Pavarotti in Las Vegas in the early '90s... but I unfortunately decided to see Andrea Bocelli instead... and I honestly regret that to this day.

Ah yes, the Brahms violin concerto. One of my favourites, no doubt about it. While you're at it, I recommend Sibelius's, as well as Mendelssohn's and Bruch Scottish Fantasy. Without doubt, the best violin concertos out there (from the few I have heard).

Never was a fan of opera... too lyrical and too much of a ...theater!
BUT I always had a great respect for it ...

And for me this can not be done in any other way other than the "operatic" way!

So not "only" respect, not any more.....

@ Stealth Hunter: That's a little involved for my taste; I've always preferred something a little lighter.


And for the Pavarotti piece, I hate sitting through an entire opera, but certain 'hits' stick with you forever, and you recognize them in a heartbeat. Thanks for posting that.

@ UnderseaLcpl: Like any music, you don't have to study it, you just listen to it. The learning comes with hearing what you like and finding out what it was.

@ Diopos: As I said to SH, opera as a whole is hard for me, but that was truly beautiful. Thanks.

Personal note: Something that really hit me as a teenager was that, while others were listening to The Beatles as a great band, I was noticing the unusual stuff. This is a prime example. don't listen to the famous lyrics and singing, listen instead to the fact that the music is not guitars and drums, but rather a string quartet! And a very good one.


This may seem off-topic in a classical discussion, but to me it exemplifies what music is all about.
