Early exploding torpedoes

I have just been playing SH3, while I was on my way back to Lorent after a patrol I met in with a small merchant, I fired two torpedoes both of which exploded exactly one minute befor they were due to hit and didn't appear to have hit the merchant. What could have caused this?

Hi, in what year are you playing? The early war torpedoes was suffering about premature explosion and it's simulated by SH3. So it's typical have premature explosions between '39-'41 ('42).

During the game, the BdU suggests you through radio messages to set hit pistol instead of the magnetic one on your TDC.

good luck!

Hi, i experienced several premature detonations in rough weather in the first years of the war. it's normal.

just set contact pistol on TDC and if the weather is bad set the torpedo depth some meter below (if the torpedo breaks the waves, it may explode!).

Of course, if you set contact pistol, pay attention to the AoB!

Historically, the torpedo directorate found flaws in the torpedoes' wiring and that the magnetic pistols were too sensitive. On top of that they also ran 6 1/2 feet deeper than set, even when using contact pistols. At least, I think that's right. Haven't read volume 1 of "Hitler's U-boat War" in a while.

If you're in slightly rough seas (7-9 metres) & all you have is G7a's and you want to use a magnetic influence fuse you can reduce the chance of premature detonation by setting the speed to slow.
