Default Aircraft machine guns

My understanding is that the .50 cal for example has a max range of about 2000m, yet in game it will shoot at you from more than double that how come?
Also is the amount of damage done by it's bullets realistic?

Not complaining, just want know

I have never seen aircraft begin firing outside realistic range.

"in game it will shoot at you from more than double that how come?"

2000 meters is just over one nautical mile. In the game, I have not experienced an aircraft firing at ranges over 2 nautical miles. Nor would I expect an aircraft to be able to hit a submarine at over 2 nautical miles with a fifty.

As for the damage. Having had the pleasure of firing the fifty, there was little that could withstand a concentrated fire of a .50 cal. Given enough rounds, it will chew through pretty much everything.

There are just some weapon systems that don't need no improvement

Yes you are right on that, it's the fire from the the rear or top turret when it flies away that I had noticed, and it wasn't exactly accurate at that point, so no problem.

The nautical mile point, hmmn, ok, I will put it down to that , plus over enthusiam on the part of the aircrew

Thanks for the answers chaps.

As a P.S., Although I had never used the VIIIC/42 and I am not sure I will because of the historical facts, this U-boat was to have it's pressure hull made of armour plate, is this modelled in the game and would it be better at withstanding the .50cal ammo?

But if th plate gets a ding or dent, even if the round doesn't goes through, it would limit the depth the sub could go to due to the plate not being able o hold a full load without giving away.

If anything, the .50 might be a little underpowered in the game.

The 146 grain 7.62 NATO at 2756 fps will go through telephone poles and brick walls, so I imagine a 270 grain .50 round at 3050 would be punching through the 5/8's steel plating on a u-boat like it was plywood.

Bottom line is, if there is an aircraft spotted, you should be diving!

If I remeber right from my days in the USMC, the .50 caliber round would penetrate 1/2 inch of armor (1cm.)

A Wermacht veteran told me that he had seen train tracks chewed up by .50 cals.
