Well, when attacking convoys I personally like, submerged in calm seas.
And of course dark or some light fog. This way is easier for me to find and attack the sweetest targets in a convoi and it's harder for them to discover my periscope. |

My prefered method is to close in on a target on the surface (at night), then submerge once within about 3km, and attack with torpedoes. This I find works well on lone mercahants, but on other occasions has worked attacking convoys.

Submerged with a bit of a moon and calm seas, although in calm weather destroyers have an easier time finding you.

At night & surfaced in calm weather I like to sneak up on unsuspecting merchants; getting to within 1000 m & then launching an eel at them. Some times I pump a few shells into them rather than waste a torpedo. I should warn others that this practice can be very risky in GWX. It's very dark & you can't always tell whether they're armed or not (some merchants are armed in 1940) so you might be in for a really nasty surprise!

Night time. Calm winds, Good visibilty with no moon as a backlight. And in waters that are 80m or more in depth to avoid both by changing direction/speed, but also my depth.
I just lost my last career because I was in ~35m deep water and had no where to go to avoid detection.
