Just think, that one volcano is burping out a lot of greenhouse gas too. A lot. According to some sources one medium sized volcano will burp out more greenhouse gases in one eruption than are emitted by human industry.

Great photo and story. Good find!

I was in Chaiten twice in 1989. The first time I was hitchhiking, doing a reconnaissanse and boarded the first bus that ever made it in on the new road.

With the volcano errupting, the only way out now is by sea and all of the Chilean Patagonia is no longer accessible by land.

Wow, she's sure going for it, isn't she? Two towns evacuated nearby and pyroclastic flows and possible emergance of lava.
Not the best of days to be in Chaitén.... :hmm:
